How To Easily Become A Top Writer

This exact strategy worked for me and it will for you

Photo by Lala Azizli on Unsplash

I set a goal for myself at the end of last month that I was going to become a top writer in a category, at the end of the month I checked my Medium profile and noticed that I had become a top writer in social media.

Safe to say, I was pretty thrilled. I asked for something, worked hard for it, and got it.

Being a top writer is something I have always wanted to do, it’s easier to become a top writer than you think. There’s certainly going to be a lot of competition in your niche no matter what your stories are about. If you want to become a top writer, there are 3 easy steps to fulfill that goal and become a top writer sooner than you think.

Is it important?

Truth is, being a top writer is more about bragging rights. You don’t get an increase in pay by Medium and it’s only there just to look pretty in your Medium profile bio.

It’s really not all that important.

Still, it’s an accomplishment when you become one. The elite and most followed writers on Medium like J.J. Pryor and Samra are top writers in many different categories, so you are definitely taking a step in the right direction once you become a top writer in a certain category.

Now you’re probably wondering, what did I do and what steps can you follow to be a top writer on Medium?

Let’s get right into it

  1. Write every day- Every writer who has tips on Medium has probably given you this advice. But it’s true, you’re only as good as your last story you have to think about always one-upping yourself after each post. I’ve been focusing on writing two or three stories a day because Medium loves it when you upload stories consistently and have a schedule for it. The best thing to do is to focus on what you want to be a top writer on and keep making different stories about it. Make sure that your content is always quality, I suggest making your stories 2–5 minute reads if you plan on creating multiple articles in a day.
  2. Use tags wisely- Tags are the most important part you have to focus on if you plan on being a top writer. With tags, people have it all wrong. When I first started on Medium I made this mistake for months until I finally learned the right strategy. When tagging your articles, make sure to use all 5 tags and your first one should be what you want to be a top writer in. The rest of the tags should be very SEO friendly and have a small number of monthly visitors. Here’s an example of my tags on one of my stories about growing on Instagram:

3. Don’t give up — Nobody likes a quitter. You won’t accomplish anything if you quit and give up. There are going to be tough days on Medium where your stories aren’t getting the views that you think it deserves but with bad days, you’re always going to have some good days. The important part is to stick through it and not stop until you complete your goal of being a top writer.
