How To Earn Money With The Medium Algorithm — I figured it out!
Since October 2023, I have been active as Alina Pitt on Medium.com. I made a couple of mistakes in the beginning and want to save you some time.
Writing is something that I absolutely enjoy; I love engaging with others, sharing human experiences, and so on. My main topics are about mental health and psychedelic or shamanic medicine, mindset, and the digital nomad lifestyle that I chose.
Nevertheless, I would be lying if I told you I am here only for the joy of this human exchange. As a digital nomad family of 4, money is always welcome, and I have finally reached the point in my life where I believe I deserve to have a lot of money.
So, yes, money is something that I would love to receive for something that I am so passionate about, as writing.
In January, my stats started looking more and more promising. I earned about $4 in my first month, $8 in my second one, and about $47 in December, my third month. This month, January 2024, I have already earned about $100 more than in the last month.
If we look at all authors earning $10 or more, about 65% earned between $10 and $100, 29% earned between $100-$1000, and 6% earned over $1000. — Buster Benson

So, let’s cut to the chase.
How to be part of the 29% on Medium?
I completely changed my strategy in January and began earning quite well.
- I stay away from any AI-writing. I always use my own voice. (I still use AI to check my grammar, because I am not native in English).
- I write about my own experiences rather than something general, I write articles like 7 Steps To Break Free From Toxic Self-Talk or How I Quit Working 9–5 And Started The Digital Nomad Lifestyle or 4 Tips To Make Any Move Easier: Digital Nomad Style
- I choose to be active on this platform six out of seven days, spending at least four hours a day. I don’t do this kind of work in a row; I engage and answer comments every hour for a little bit, but it adds up. When I look at my number of responses now, I have a total of 2260, and I add about 60–100 new ones every day. This includes every ‘Thank you’ and smiley response too.
- I spend 70% of my time on ENGAGEMENT and only about 30% on writing. I aim to publish around five articles per week, focusing on quality content. I read stories I’m interested in, highlight inspiring or interesting things, clap (ideally 50 times if I really like it), and look for honest human exchanges. I enjoy engaging in conversations about topics that interest me; it’s fun.

It might seem like a lot of work, but on most days, it doesn’t feel that way because I genuinely enjoy it. Of course, on some days, I might not feel like doing much, so I let it come back naturally. Like today, I decided to take a day off. Then, after my Turkey Tail Mushroom Tea, I felt like sharing how I turned my first month of 2024 around.
