THE DAILY WRITE

How to Do More of What Makes You Happy

The simplest way is to make a list

I used to think wealth and achievements would make me happy in life. It is interesting how my happy list reveals my change in viewpoint.

1. Doing things I enjoy

Things I enjoy doing are: eating out with family and friends, going to art exhibitions and the theatre, and watching my favourite artists perform live. At concerts, it makes me happy to sing and dance and not care who is watching.

2. Revisiting happy memories

I love looking at old photos and videos which remind me of the holidays I have been on and the fun things I have done in my life. It makes me want to spend more time creating more happy memories.

3. My children

The most rewarding thing about having children is when you witness their milestones and see their individual personalities develop.

There are so many little moments I share with my children, which fill me with joy — like their hugs, how their small hands feel when holding mine, the way my three-year-old says “I love ew,” when they wave and blow kisses at me from afar, and when something is so funny they cannot stop giggling.

4. True friendship

My best friends are those with whom it doesn’t matter that months have passed before we meet. Whenever we catch up, we enjoy each other’s company so much that we completely lose track of time.

5. Writing

Writing makes me happy because I find it fun. I do it because I enjoy the process of expressing myself in words. It feels great to be doing something creative.

When I write, I forget about the world around me and I lose track of time. I relish the sense of achievement I feel when I finish a story and I am excited about writing the next one.

The thing that makes me happiest about writing is when I discover people who have taken the time to read and enjoy my work.

6. Peace: a break from being a Mum

I like the peace I get when the children are at school and nursery. Sometimes it is the opportunity for grown-up time with my husband, to get out and do things with just the two of us, or watch an episode of a good TV series or film after the children have gone to bed.

I also enjoy the days when I have the house to myself and can enjoy quiet and uninterrupted ‘me’ time to do whatever I choose.

7. Nature

Being outside when the sun is shining in a clear blue sky never fails to lift my mood. I like hearing the birds sing and seeing flowers bloom from the cherry blossoms of spring to the roses in the summer.

I like the way the colour of the leaves in the trees changes through the seasons. I love seeing pretty cloud formations and beautiful sunrises and sunsets which make you go “Wow!”

8. Having a clean and tidy home

Clean sheets make me happy.

I spent time decluttering our home before I had each of my children and before we moved a couple of years ago. Getting rid of random junk made me feel lighter, more free, more organised, and happier.

Maybe when the children are older, I will get around to sorting the clothes and stuff sitting in boxes or stacked like columns in our bedroom, or all the things I have shoved in the garage and the cupboard under the stairs.

9. Favourite food

Chocolate and cake make me happy. To me steaming pho or ramen is happiness in a bowl, especially when it is cold outside.

10. My first cup of tea in the day

All I ask is for it to be hot with one sugar and the colour of He-Man.

Key Message: It is all too easy to forget about the simple things which contribute to happiness in the busyness of every day life. Sometimes they can be something which is sitting right under your nose.
