How to Decide on What You Want to Write About

It’s more than just following and writing about a trend right?

Yes I would say.

Much more.

“Write the kind of story you would like to read. People will give you all sorts of advice about writing, but if you are not writing something you like, no one else will like it either”

-Meg Cabot

The last few days maybe even a week or more, I’ve been reading a lot of the same things.

“What to write on medium

How to gain more views and followers”

From zero to retired by writing everyday”

Sure.

This is what everyone wants to achieve. But, following these trends and simply regurgitating the same words that you just read from a different article with thousands of views, is not the way.

You should want to provide VALUE.

Yes. In bold.

Big, bold, VALUE.

Real value. Not just how someone can get quick gratification with zero effort. It should be meaningful. It should really help someone and be entertaining, informing, knowledgeable.

Don’t just be selfish and serve your own needs and follow the hot topics so you can receive the clicks.

Be authentic.

Authentically, you. Original.

Take a look at that tree.

Grown.

Tested and trialed by the elements.

With a story of its own. That tree will always be a tree until it’s days are done. But, its story will continue to grow until that time has come.

Much like that tree you have a story.

A specific set of events that you went through.

Still growing and learning as well.

Share that story, that value, those words.

You never know who it could resonate with.

“You can make anything by writing”

-C.S Lewis

3 Things I Aim For:

  • Share a personal story. A story is something that is relatable to others. An experience that someone else may have gone through. Shows how you handled it and what others could gain from that.
  • Provide value. Be an expert (or at least try to be) on the topic you are writing about. Research it, compile it into the best value that you can present.
  • Be of service. Provide a service with your articles and words. Explain your “how to’s” or “what to do’s”. Odds are majority of people are reading your content to figure out those very answers.

I would also say, the more you read the easier writing will become. You will gain more knowledge, new vocabulary, and better structure. Reading is the gift, writing is the skill.

For me to sit here and say I have all the answers would be a lie.

However,

I am being authentic and real with you right now.

I needed to hear those words before I started writing. Writing is more than just jotting down words. It has to flow naturally and just feel organic.

I’m trying to deliver on the very things I stated above.

A copy/paste method just seems so bland and lifeless.

Nobody else has your story, they have their own. But, what we can learn from each other’s stories, perspectives and expertise is limitless.

Authenticity.

That’s the key.
