How to deal with Self-doubt

Self-doubt strategies…

I’ve always wanted an improvement in every area of my life. We all want that. We want to feel and even be the best version of ourselves every day, over time. But the truth is... It does not turn out that way completely.

I’m in my second year at Uni, and I’ve always thought about how I work hard to improve myself within my skillset but it still gets me to doubt myself about what the future holds.

I'm talking about SELF-DOUBT, most people need to understand what it is and how to get around it. We are all brilliant, but we channel this brilliance in other aspects that we do not need to.

Self-doubt is a common feeling that most people experience at some point in their lives. At times when they're at their best or almost at their peak. It can manifest in various forms, such as questioning your abilities, and capabilities, feeling insecure about your decisions, or even feeling like an imposter in your own life. Although it is a common feeling, self-doubt can be challenging to work with, and it can have a magnitude impact on your confidence level and overall well-being (Self-Esteem).

Overcoming Self Doubt:

One of the first steps to overcoming self-doubt is acknowledging and admitting it. Most times even tho I don't like sharing it, I've always doubted myself and I live up to it. I tell myself "Hey! It's a process, I have to get over this phase." It's important to recognize when you're experiencing self-doubt and to be aware of the negative viewpoints and beliefs that accompany it. Once you recognize it, you can begin to challenge those negative instincts and beliefs by questioning their validity. Ask yourself if there is any evidence to support them or if they are simply unfounded fears you have been giving out time to think about.

Another helpful tactic is to focus on your strengths and accomplishments. I take moments like this as a drive where I reflect on what have done, what God has helped me with massively, my grades... and I consider it a process. When you're feeling doubtful, it's easy to focus on your weaknesses and shortcomings. However, it's important to remember that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and acknowledging them can help boost your confidence and remind you of your abilities.

It's also essential to practice self-compassion. Be kind to yourself, be proud of yourself, affirm and treat yourself as you would a good friend. Instead of being self-critical or letting your inner critic judge you, try to offer yourself words of encouragement and support. Remember that making mistakes is a natural part of learning and growing, and it doesn't make you any less capable.

Another helpful strategy is to seek support from others. I take time to talk to friends, family members, my course Advisor ( I love her so much!) or a therapist about your feelings of self-doubt. It can be comforting to know that others have gone through similar experiences and can offer support and guidance on the issue. Additionally, surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people can help boost your confidence level and remind you of your worth and how lovely you are.

It's also important to set realistic expectations for yourself. I strictly set goals for my health status and how far I know I could work. When you set unrealistic goals, it can be easy to feel like a failure when you don't meet them or when you don’t execute the right strategies. Instead, try to set achievable goals that align with your abilities and values. Celebrate small victories along the way and recognize that progress takes time. Yes, it does.

Another helpful strategy is to practice mindfulness. YOU HAVE TO BE PRESENT, ACTIVE!!!. Mindfulness involves being present in the moment and non-judgmentally observing your thoughts and feelings. By practicing mindfulness, you can become more more aware of your self-doubt and learn to let go of negative thoughts and misbeliefs.

It's important to remember that overcoming self-doubt is a process, A BIG ONE and it won't happen overnight. It takes time and effort to change negative thought processes and build confidence. However, by practicing self-compassion, focusing on your strengths, seeking support from others (trustees), and setting realistic expectations, you can gradually overcome self-doubt and build a more positive and confident mindset in yourself.

Lastly, self-doubt can be a challenging feeling to explore your chances and opportunities, but it's important to remember that it's a natural part of the human experience. By acknowledging your self-doubt, focusing on your strengths, practicing self-compassion, loving yourself, seeking support from others, setting realistic expectations, and practicing mindfulness, you can gradually overcome self-doubt and build a more positive and confident mindset. Remember, progress takes time, so be patient and kind to yourself along the way.
