Creators need to keep these concepts at the forefront of their mind so that they can unravel their truth and provide the value that the world needs by moving forward boldly.

Let’s take a look at these 3 key concepts closely.

Lean on Your Quirks & Interests

There is a 1 in 10 to the 2,685,000th power of you being alive today.

According to Dr. Ali Binazir, that’s the “same as having a group of 2 million people each roll a trillion-sided die and every roll landing on the same number.” The fact that you and I are alive is miraculous.

Even stranger is the fact that we’re all so different but similar at the same time. No one like you has existed in history. You are the one and only you. Your perspective, circumstances, and life experiences shape the way in which you see and interact with the world. And this gift is valuable because it can allow you to see solutions where others see problems. But we fail to consider the impact we can make because “we’re not like others” which snares us in a comparison trap.

Comparison is an opportunity to learn from others and build, challenge, or defend the products or ideas that shape the world. However, this does not happen without self-awareness and accepting your strengths and limitations.

Examine yourself. Examine what you read, watch, or do all the time and let this form the direction to which you follow.

Believe in Secrets

Believe that there are secrets left to explore.

The process of evolution is not relegated to physical transformations, but our minds as well with the transfer of ideas. Ideas spread quickly.

Look at how the iPhone has changed communication forever and given us access to an abundance of information at our fingertips. Transformation can take place in any domain. I grew up at a time when taking a lot of 3-point shots in basketball wasn’t fashionable, but by the time I became a coach that all changed in large part to Mike D’Antoni’s Phoenix Suns. At the professional level, they were one of the first to emphasize the 3pt line and pace. Now the NBA is dominated by the idea of “pace and space.”

Even in my classroom I’m looking for secrets. I’m looking for the best way to present a lesson, connect with a student, or improve my grading practices.

If you believe in secrets you’re more likely to push the envelope on your development and come up with ideas that improve your surroundings.

Play the Long-Game

Creativity is necessary to solve answers that aren’t straight forward.

Following in the footsteps of those who have “done it” can be an effective strategy because you can learn from their mistakes. However, each person’s journey is different as well as the challenges they face.

So, every step can’t be copy and pasted. There is risk involved in developing your own way of creating value through your work. The mistake that trips people up is focusing on the short-term losses and making ineffective decisions because of them. It’s understandable because it can feel like the world is collapsing on top of you. When we hit a losing streak in basketball, it can be a tough moment to manage, but something I’ve learned is that you have to focus on the next play. The next play pulls you into the moment so you can be most effective in it. As a result, your future gets better because effective decisions compound.

Play long-term games by focusing on being effective versus being right or letting emotions overwhelm you. Ask for help when you need it, quit when you need to quit, and remain curious and engaged.

Value isn’t created in an instant, it’s built with one effective decision after another.
