Why is everyone looking to publish children literature?
Children’s books constitute one of the most expansive and rapidly growing sections in both Amazon’s digital realm and traditional brick-and-mortar stores worldwide. The realm of children’s publishing encompasses tailored publications, including children’s picture books, children’s literature, and engaging popular science encyclopedias. At the heart of this landscape lies the picture book, a unique form of children’s literature that artfully merges imagery with language to convey narratives. Crafted to cater exclusively to children, it’s a medium that harmoniously weaves storytelling through illustration. Correspondingly, children’s literature is an artistic and literary endeavor designed or adapted to nurture youthful development and cater to their aesthetic sensibilities.

Children’s books have carved a significant niche, comprising 32.8% of all book sales in the United States as of 2022. The year 2022 witnessed the sale of a remarkable 250.76 million children’s books, underlining the enduring appeal of these literary treasures. Within this arena, sales have increased by a notable 11.37% since 2018.
While print sales dipped in 2021 compared to the preceding year, they remained elevated over the 2019 figures. The landscape as of October 2, 2021, juxtaposed against the previous year, shows the following:
- Juvenile fiction: +13.7%
- Juvenile nonfiction: -4.2%
In 2022, children’s books continue to claim a formidable share, constituting 32.8% of all book sales within the United States. The zenith of 2022 observed the sale of a staggering 250.76 million children’s books. Notably, the category’s preeminence rests upon children’s fiction, accounting for over 184 million annual copies, while the nonfiction sector contributes an impressive 67 million. In a forward glance, the year 2023 anticipates the US children’s book market to burgeon to a robust $2.62 billion.
Within this milieu, the United States reigns supreme, commanding 22.8% of the global children’s book revenue, underscoring its influential standing within the broader context of children’s literary engagement.

Let’s do some math
US Market Children Books Sales 2022
Based on the data above, let’s take a look at the market opportunity for a) writing children literature and b) publishing.
Nearly one-third of all kids’ books sold today feature a licensed character. What does this mean? Looking at this from a different side, it means that two thirds of kids books sold feature a random non-licensed character. This is where children’s books illustrated by Midjourney AI comes into play. How big is the market in the US for non-licensed kids books sold? $1.25 billion in 2022.
US Market Children Books Sales 2022 — $2.62 billion

But what if I want to publish in another language?
Well, there’s even better news on this front. The US sales of $2.62 bilion amount to only 22.8% of the total world market. That means that the global market for children’s book amounts to something in the vicinity of $11.5 bilion. Assuming the amount of licensed content is similar world wide, it means the opportunity to enter the localized markets is around $5.61 billion (excluding the US).
In other words, there is a $4.23 billion market for non-English children fiction books. Depending on the size of the market (which has a big overlap with the total language speakers plus the people wanting to teach their children a second language), you might have a better chance of writing a best seller if you focus on any other languge besides English.
