How to Choose Which Topic Goes on Your Blog or On Medium

It’s not always easy

I have a confession —

While there are very popular Medium writers telling you how they optimize their Medium posts for Google, I do my darndest to NOT get my Medium posts to rank.

Why?

Because I want my blog posts to rank and I don’t want to compete with myself if my posts on Medium start ranking.

So, figuring out which topics to publish on Medium and which topics to write for my blog isn’t all cut and dry for me.

Here are three things I look at when I decide on what to write on Medium vs. my blog.

1. Is There a Keyword Associated with the Topic?

As I mentioned, if there is a keyword that I could use for a blog post it will NOT go on Medium. Instead, I’ll tweak the idea and make sure not to use the keywords my blog is associated with.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have this idea when I started with Medium.

One of my earlier posts started taking off and it’s my most popular post on Medium.

Most of the views are all external for my most popular post.

For how popular the post is, I’ve only earned around $100 for it.

Compare that to my second most popular post. That post has fewer views but has almost $300 in profit.

As you can see from the graphs alone, my most popular Medium post is getting traffic from Google, which can negatively impact my blog’s traffic.

You might not think that’s bad at all. I mean, if people come to Medium, they can follow me and learn more about me, but for two years I had no clue this was happening.

So, once I knew this I made sure to NOT use the same keywords that my blog ranks for or any for that matter.

I stand a chance to make more money with Medium subscribers than with external readers.

For now, I’m doing my best to get more Medium readers to my most popular post by linking it to my more recent posts.

2. Is the Topic Already Published on My Blog?

I started my Medium account as a way to republish my existing blog posts. I did this several times, and then I stopped using Medium for years.

It was in 2020 that I started dabbling in using Medium more to build my brand and see if I could make money on Medium.

So, instead of just republishing existing posts, I will piggyback on them and create new — but similar topical — posts.

For example, this year on my blog I published my new copywriting rates.

But, on Medium, I published that I raised my freelance rates and something interesting happened.

So, while my blog post was a deep dive into my rates and how to set them, on Medium, I had more fun and took the idea of raising my rates and what resulted in that.

I try not to do this all too often as I want my Medium content to reflect me as a person rather than trying to teach new writers.

Save the teaching on my blog, and let Medium be an expression of how I’m feeling about my business and things like that.

Is the Topic More Global or is It More Personal?

When I started my blog, I wrote very personal blog posts. Posts like how to prove yourself, and I received many comments.

But over the years blogging has changed and I don’t receive as many comments on my blog posts as I used to. So it makes me wonder, is it because I’m no longer writing very personal blog posts?

Probably, but I also know people are on social more, and that’s where the engagement and comments are now.

So, that’s why I started writing more personal experiences on Medium than on my blog.

I know I should also incorporate personal posts on my blog to get those comments, but for now, I’m having fun doing this on Medium.

It’s Not That Easy

But, it’s still not that easy to decide what goes on my blog and what goes on Medium.

My most recent few posts could have lived on my blog, but in the end, I chose Medium, so we will see if that was the right choice.

How do you choose what goes on your blog and what goes on Medium? Is it easy for you? Do you have a strategy? Let me know!
