How to Care for your Emotional Well-Being
A poorly understood taboo topic…

Let’s face it, we are complex beings. While a beautiful combination of physical, emotional and spiritual, all are just as essential for our overall wellness.
We mainly focus on the physical because it’s the part what we see every day. However, we can’t forget about other parts which may be causing us damage.
Most of us tend to focus on the physical aspect of our well-being. Probably because that is the part we get to see every day. However, neglecting the other parts can still be damaging to us.
Making sense of our emotional health is not as simple as our physical health.
The National Institutes of Health defines emotional health as “the ability to successfully handle life’s stresses and adapt to change and difficult times.”
When we feel emotionally unwell, we feel it as much as when we are physically unwell. We may feel low self-esteem, irritability and experience cravings for unhealthy foods.
Since most of us don’t know how to care for and improve our emotional well-being, here are some tips on how we might accomplish this.
Staying active and getting regular exercise helps both the physical and mental health. It has been proven to help symptoms of poor mental health like depression and anxiety by allowing our bodies to release endorphins that improve mood and general well-being.
We should try and push ourselves on the days we don’t feel like getting up and working out. Our mental and physical well-being will thank us. It also makes us feel like we are in control of our bodies.
By learning to identify our feelings we can understand and communicate them. Because emotions can be overwhelming, we should be patient with ourselves and express them to the appropriate people.
There is a lot going in our lives these days between trying to stay alive, afford a standard lifestyle and a social life. We don’t always have time to make mental health a priority. It almost seems like a luxury we can’t afford. We tend to be more emotionally available for others than for ourselves.
We should remember to schedule a time for ourselves when we plan our week to do something that recharges your battery — maybe schedule time alone to watch a favorite TV show.
I remember when I was young, I took naps during the day. Now I am unable to sleep during the day even if I found the time. This is why we need to make sure we get the much-needed rest we need.
This is done by having adhering to a strict bedtime routine. This means going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time every morning. Studies also show that reducing screen time also helps reduce stress levels.
Since our lives are not anywhere near perfect, there are always some things to be grateful for. Focusing on the good things and having gratitude can literally turn our lives around and help us realize things are better than we realize.
It’s sad that the issue of mental health is a taboo topic that is poorly understood. Even in this information age, most people don’t know they can improve their psychological well -being.
Being emotionally healthy doesn’t mean you are always happy but that you can handle your emotions well.
We must remember to prioritize being kind to ourselves at all times.
