How to Build Trust Effectively

Photo by Zdeněk Macháček on Unsplash

We often want people to get convinced for many different reasons/topics/stuffs we are communicating with them, for example; you want your superior to listen to the best idea you are proposing, you want your loved ones to listen to the advice you are giving, etc. But this does not go as simple as said. There are challenges in those communications. Sometimes or most of the time you might feel that you have failed in achieving success in communicating those points. You feel disappointed in being rejected or you fall prey to the opposite idea that might have come from someone else even though the idea you proposed is far better.

So why do you fail? The primary reason is that you are not successful in building trust. However, there are 4 other factors to consider:

Belief, Approach, Communication and Responsibility

Lets break them step-by-step and see how you can build the trust effectively:

Belief

An idea is born in your thoughts/mind. The first step is to be comfortable and have belief in the idea you are trying to implant on someone or else there is absolutely no point in convincing people for which you do not believe it yourself.

“Believe something and the Universe is on its way to being changed. Because you’ve changed, by believing. Once you’ve changed, other things start to follow. Isn’t that the way it works?” ― Diane Duane

In such cases, where you have doubt on your own belief but still move ahead in convincing others, you will miserably fail unless you have a great friend, a mentor or guide who makes your belief stronger. So tip here based on the situation is to talk with your close friends or relatives or colleagues to get a first impressions of your idea, if ever you have a doubt.

Once you believe, the next step is the way you communicate will define how you are going to present your idea.

Approach

The way you approach is going to define how the person in front of you is going to inherit the idea. Identify your approach and how consciously you take your step to convince the person in front of you

I like to approach every day as it is the only day of my life

Above stems true for every act you do, Approach it as this is your only chance, give your full energy, thought process and creativity to express your idea in best possible convincing manner. The way you approach will define how the idea is inherited by the people or group of people in front of you. Its important to take care of your body language and most importantly tone of your speech in this entire journey.

Again easy said then done!!!

Have you ever approached an animal in a zoo or pet you are not familiar with ? The first reaction that comes up (unconsciously) even if the animal is not dangerous is some caution and care you take while approaching it. Similarly, the pet or animal is going to judge your approach and react accordingly. The example given is to identify your unconscious way of approach and once identified how consciously you take your next step to approach the animal. The end result might vary as the approach judged by the pet or animal might be according to its own experience of judging people. But that’s not our goal just take a step back and keep your focus on conscious way of approaching with proper time, language and positive body language . Person in front of you is going to judge you unconsciously based on your approach and if you identify the correct way of approaching people around you then you have reached 25% to your successful communication towards wining the trust.

Communication

The Art of Communication is the Language of Leadership → James Humes

The moment you decide to communicate you should go in to an act of Leadership ; Think like a Leader , Behave like a Leader and at-last communicate like a Leader. While doing so, never forget to be calm and gentle or you will lose the game before you start.

Easy Said then Done..…Relax

Not many think that they can lead or make an effective communication to get there idea out.

Remember, when you were a kid the act of crying you would do to get your message out when you cannot speak your words, the action of giving an exam, excelling or taking part in sports, or some decision which has impacted your life in which you were the Leader at that Moment. No matter the result, you had took some decision to move ahead and that makes you a leader for that particular moment. If you have doubt remember last time you went through such decision making phase and then you will be good to go ahead.

Responsibility

Responsibilities are given to him on whom trust rests. Responsibility is always a sign of trust → James Cash Penney

Show in your communication and approach that you are responsible or you to lead it to the expected outcome so that the idea is inherited in a positive fashion. If you convince that the idea is going to be in responsible hands or if you are executing that idea and you yourself have taken full responsibility about it then the idea you are implanting in others takes a big leap in there ambiguous mind. Taking full responsibility either for executing the idea or delegating and following the idea to its completion is the core principle in this step.

Once above steps are executed, trust will define if the idea/message is going to be acceptable or unacceptable. Trust is not a separate factor but it gets developed along with the all four factors of presenting an idea/message journey.

If you are successful in executing each of the above steps you will be able to build the trust effectively. Above, I have tried to break the steps in sequential manner. Initially it will take time and with experience and practice you can train your brain to think and plan the steps in your head as soon as you have an idea to propose and execute.

Trust
Belief
Responsibility
Approach
Communication
