How to build the life you want …
Three easy steps to better future

Recently I quit my job. It was one in a series that was just that, a JOB. I had a couple of days off so I decided I need to clean and reorganize my office. I might seem like a simple idea. Clean, rearrange some furniture, and start fresh. It isn’t and it wasn’t.
We human have away of holding on to our past. We spend quite a while dealing with the remnants of a life we have not lived for a while.
Deal with the past
As I cleaned and moved my stuff I uncovered remnants of who I used to be. In my first mid life crisis I became a painter. I have books and books on painting an drawing and plenty of supplies. I even have few dozen completed works. Life however has a way of settling in. I have a new life, a new wife, and new career. I am not the broken shell of the man I was. Still it remains. It is a part of me.
I wish I could tell you that I found the magic elixir or incantation for dealing with STUFF. I haven’t. I can tell you that I did pair down. I mourned my past and then let go where I could. I purged things that no longer serve a purpose. I rearrange my furniture around who I am now. I am happy to say that things are more functional.

Live in the now
Living is one of the hardest struggles. Day by day life happens. In the last few years between my last major purge a few things have happened. My dad's died, some friends have died, and the people that I knew as my family have broken up and changed. I found myself going through some photographs, gifts and various artifacts. I found myself stepping back into a different time and into a different life. It was hard to know that that was not my life anymore.
To live in the now. I made peace. I accepted the deaths, the changes, and the choices that had occurred. I cannot tell you any shortcuts but I can tell you it is possible. I still miss some of my family and friends but my life is different now. I have new friends and new family. They are replacements but they are real in the here and the now.

I needed to reconcile with my past before I could move forward. I needed examine the skeletons in my closet; to accept them, embrace them, and understand them. Now I can move forward. Now I can build something new. .

Your past can be a rapacious creditor. It can tear you down, rip you up, and leave you with nothing. Alternatively your past can be the seeds of future. With time, attention, and proper use they can allow you to build a whole new world for yourself, a life worth living. The choice is yours.
