How To Build A Medium Following By Paying It Forward

Facebook Medium Groups Are Ideal For FOM

Rather than Follow for Follow, There’s A New Strategy In Facebook Groups

The idea is to get group members to actively adopt the concept of paying it forward.

That’s what the new Friends of Medium (FOM) membership is designed to do, and it is why we get extra money as a FOM when our own stories are read.

Simple Steps Bring Great Rewards

Step One As a FOM I share a link to another writer’s story in a FB group, using the Medium friend’s share link option. It’s on their platform and shares directly to the Facebook group.

That writer earns from me reading and being engaged before I shared the link.

Step Two Within the FB group, a reader opens the shared story on Medium, reads it, and fully interacts: with comments, claps, highlights, follows.

The story writer earns, and their earnings are commensurate with their own subscription level. They don’t have to be a FOM to be included

Sharing The Rewards Including With The FOM Who Opened The Door To Paying It Forward

Step Three In the FB group, in the Paying It Forward thread, the reader now becomes the writer. They share their own link and their story gets read, and full engagement. That includes claps, highlights, comments and followers. The writer earns.

Step Four As the FOM, I post my Medium profile link, others readers click and they can choose to read any one of my stories. I get read, full engagement and new followers. I am rewarded.

This pattern of building interaction can be repeated several times in a single Pay It Forward thread, and encourages other readers/writers to participate

Building Our Community

If each of us responds on Medium to the comments we get, reciprocates with our new followers, and continues to Pay It Forward, we will build a thriving Medium community that keeps growing

That way, we are all supporting each other in a genuine way. You don’t have to be a FOM to participate.

Being Prepared For Full Engagement

You do have to be prepared to be fully engaged, if you want to add your own story links to the Pay It Forward thread

Those who drop their link bombs 💣 and get called out for failing to genuinely participate can expect to have their links removed from the thread.

Not all Medium writers have the option to fully participate.

I am conscious of the fact that not all writers on Medium are part of the MPP/Scribe platform. We can only continue to ask Medium to open up to those writers as soon as possible.

Using the Ko-Fi platform or similar platforms is an option for individual readers to help support them directly

That’s definitely another way to Pay It Forward .
