How to boost your emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is an increasingly important asset to have. It is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand them, and see how they affect those around you. It enables you to understand the emotions of others and even determine their behavior.

Developing your emotional intelligence (EI) will help you to improve and sustain relationships with others and prevent conflicts. Emotional intelligence is not given, and it is not something you are born with. It needs to be developed and trained persistently. There are certain techniques you can keep in mind to let your EI grow and keep it sharp.

How do you do it? Here are a few points:

1. Practice self-awareness

When psychology students start their degrees, one of the first things they need to do is to learn how to evaluate and understand themselves, before they can proceed to others. This helps them ‘fit in someone’s shoes’ better in the future. Similarly, before you start trying to understand others, you first need to look at yourself.

Try to observe how you are feeling at every moment, what determines the way you feel like that, and what triggers certain feelings and behaviors of yours.

Keep in mind that you do not need to over-analyze your feelings and emotions, it is only important to stay aware.

2. Manage your actions and emotions

Emotional responses can more often than not influence our behavior quite substantially. Creating a basic set of your core values can help you stop for a while and evaluate the situation before acting. Understand what your values are, prioritize them and then pursue them and live by them. This is an important step because by living up to your values you are taking the second step to become an emotionally intelligent person.

Don’t forget that making mistakes is normal and deviations from your set of values will occur, but it is important that you understand why you made those mistakes and learn from them.

3. Get motivated

Once you have understood your values, you can start setting small goals to help you stay on track. These will help you see the bigger picture in a broader perspective. By achieving these goals, you will be able to stay motivated and focused on your targets. Emotionally intelligent people keep themselves motivated and often reward themselves for fulfilling their small goals. Get into that practice now.

I want to stress the ‘reward’ part. You are worth the reward. It does not need to be anything big, but it is important to recognize that you are rewarding yourself for achieving one of your small goals. For me, a single espresso at my favorite coffee house does the job pretty well.

4. Work on your empathy

Empathy is the ability to connect with other people and understand how they are feeling, what motivates their behavior and what are their needs and opinions. Get on to this step once you have had a look at yourself in step 1.

Try to understand people around you and their behavior drivers and you will be able to understand why they behave the way they do and how they might react in the future.

So how do you understand people better?

Talk to them! A simple chat can reveal more information than you would have thought.

Get out of your everyday environment. Try new things. Try things recommended by others. It will open your eyes and let you see things from their perspective.

Examine your biases. Challenge yourself to look at others without the bias you might hold against them. It adds a new perspective.

5. Develop your social skills

Get out there, present yourself, talk to other people, get noticed and gather different opinions. By creating your social presence, you will get more skilled in managing conflicts and understanding others.

You can do it in many different ways — start a blog, register on Medium and start following thought leaders (or become one yourself), open a social media account and just take the variety of people around you in. Don’t be afraid to talk to people.

These are only a few steps to aid your EI journey. Emotional intelligence is not something you get and that is it. It is a process of continuous development, constant enhancements and making sure you are living by your values and understanding emotions (both yours and others’). By implementing these points in your life, you can get one step closer to getting a deeper insight into the world of people around you. Trust me, it is way different than yours.
