Starting To Self-Publish
How to Become a New York Times Best-Selling Author Using Medium’s Self-Publishing Feature
In the age of self-publishing, becoming a best-selling author has never been easier

If you’re wondering if it’s possible for an author to be a NY Times best-seller using the self-publishing feature of online publishing platform Medium, then the answer is yes. This article will show you how.
Let’s get your imagination going and dive into some details!
1) Identify Your Niche
You can’t write a book about everything, so think about what you have the most experience with and/or can write about in the most interesting manner. To be a NY Times best-selling author, your book must be a blockbuster in terms of sales. This means that it’s likely your best bet to niche down as much as possible. For example, I wrote a book on Complementary and Integrative health.
2) Select The Right Publisher
Each publication is unique and its approach varies. Some go by their own titles; others respect what their authors write. Currently, there are various publications to get your work noticed here on medium.
3) Create A Professional Title And Logline
Now that you’ve identified your niche, what are you going to name your book?
Remember that the title is the most important aspect of marketing your book; it’s what will draw readers to click.
Your title needs to be descriptive enough to grasp the attention of users who haven’t heard of your topic but not so descriptive as to sound boring or too specific.
Medium is an amazing publishing platform that has revolutionized the world of creative writing in the past few years. Not only has it given voice to countless writers who may have never had a chance to be read, but it has also empowered people in developing countries to tell their stories without the need for a big publishing company.
This article will provide a step-by-step guide to self-publishing on Medium, which can help you start building your own following in the world of publishing.
(Note: This guide is intended for the experienced writer who has written a few stories, although it shouldn’t be too difficult for someone with little experience to follow along.)
If you’re new to Medium (and writing in general), there’s a good chance you’re feeling overwhelmed by this platform and how it works.
It’s important to realize that while the first few posts you put up might not do very well, there is absolutely no obligation to post your first story on Medium. You can write a quick synopsis of your book or even a short story, and if you don’t have anything other stories to show, it may be easier to just post something entirely new.
The advice here is meant for those who are already committed to writing but aren’t sure how to get started.
So what is the first step to starting your own publishing journey?
First, you need to set up a Medium account of your own. (Don’t worry, it’s really easy.) Go to medium.com/my/signup and complete the form as follows.
What are you going to write about?
This is where you will be able to include links within your posts that lead back to other Medium stories you have written. You can also include excerpts from your books or short stories, which will give readers a better understanding of what you have to offer.
How are you going to publish your posts?
You Have A Few Options Here

The first is to post your writing on Medium, which will allow you to create posts and view analytics but won’t give you the option to sell your stories directly, for this you’ll need 100 followers to be eligible to receive compensation for your work.
You can also publish your work on various publications, including self-publishing, which is what we’ll be talking about in this article.
If you are writing under another pen name (or using a pseudonym) for your work, this should be perfectly fine to use.
Next, you’ll want to make sure you have your articles and stories properly formatted.
This is step one in self-publishing on Medium, and it’s important to get this right.
You can find more details on how to format your work here, but the general idea is that;
- Your works should be formatted in a specific way to look nice and clean.
- Your story should be tagged properly with your main keywords. You can now utilize the SEO feature to rank on search engines.

The first time you post a piece of writing to Medium, you will most likely have to write a short post, which will generally be around 500–800 words long (for those who are more advanced). This is one of the best ways to get your writing and yourself noticed on Medium.
If you’re a newcomer, it might be difficult to find an audience. This is where you can leverage Medium’s network to help better promote your work.
Another thing you’ll want to do at this point is set up a Twitter account or Facebook page that has the same name as your pen name. If you don’t want to use the same name, you can use your author name.
You might want to do something similar with your Facebook page if you already have one.
Before you start publishing your story, it’s important to make sure that the title is properly formatted. You don’t want your creative writing to appear as a random jumble of words with no title.
Your title should have some elements that make it interesting enough for readers to click on them;
- The title should be unique and tell people what the story is about.
- The title should be short and straightforward and be more descriptive than the article itself.
Make sure you find a way to promote your post after you publish it. You can use Medium to promote your posts as well as other sites. You can also use social media and email newsletters to get readers to click through on your post and read it.
After you have finished writing your piece, it’s time to publish it. When you post, you should be able to see a “Publish” button that will let you post directly to your Medium account.
You can also add in images, quotes, links, etc.
The most important thing to remember here is that you should keep your story engaging. You want to keep the readers wanting more by leaving them on an exciting story. This will help them keep coming back for more.
Another thing you should do while self-publishing is to try and get some feedback on your work. This can make your stories better and help you improve so you can get better results going forward.
You can use the comments feature to get this feedback.
The more feedback you can get, the better your story will be.
