How to be Your Authentic Self: 13 Powerful Tips

When we’re authentic, we’re true to ourselves. We let go of the masks we wear and the personas we put on. We stop trying to be someone else and start being ourselves. This is not always easy — it’s hard to let go of our perfectionism and our need to compare ourselves to others. But it is worth it, because when we’re authentic, we live a more fulfilling life. Here are some tips to up your A-game and maintain authenticity.
When I started with self-help, it was confusing because I was trying to improve myself, too. Writing eBooks on self-help helped me gain insight into how I should remain true to myself while learning at the same time. No guru on self-help is perfect. And I don’t call myself a guru by any means.
However, I’d like to share what I’ve learned over the years in writing self-help and what I think are the most important aspects. I’d also like to say that self-help isn’t a one size fits all. Some of these may help you, some may not, it’s up to you.
Know Thyself, Your True Self
Foremost, get to know yourself. What are your values? What do you believe in? What makes you happy? What are your inner core beliefs? When you clearly understand who you are, it’s easier to stay true to yourself.
Be Confident
If you don’t believe in yourself, it’ll be hard to convince others to do the same. When you’re confident in your abilities and who you are as a person, it shows. People are drawn to those who are comfortable in their own skin and exude positive energy.
Set Boundaries
In order to remain authentic to yourself, it’s important to set boundaries. This means knowing what you will and won’t tolerate from others, as well as saying “no” when needed. Establishing personal boundaries shows that you’re not a pushover and that you know your worth.
Always Be Honest
Honesty is always the best policy — with others and with yourself. When you’re honest, it shows that you have integrity and people are more likely to trust you. Being honest also means being true to your word and following through on your promises.

Stand Up for Yourself
If someone tries to take advantage of you or treats you poorly, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. This doesn’t mean being rude or confrontational, but it means standing firm in your convictions and not letting others walk all over you.
Be True to Your Word
If you say you’re going to do something, do it. This is important in both personal and professional relationships. When you follow through on your commitments, it shows that you’re reliable and trustworthy. Being true to your word can help you be a more authentic person.
Do Unto Others While Searching for Your Authentic Self
This golden rule applies to both personal and professional relationships. Treating others with respect, kindness, and compassion will not only make them feel good, but it will also reflect positively on you. When you’re nice to others, people are more likely to be nice to you in return.
Be Transparent While Building Meaningful Relationships
Be transparent with the people in your life. If you’re feeling lost or unsure of who you are, tell your friends and family. They can be a significant source of support and guidance towards becoming your authentic self. When you’re living authentically, you can create positive alternatives to scenarios where you might doubt yourself.
Embrace Your Quirks for a More Authentic Life
Own your quirks and embrace them. These are the things that make you unique, so don’t hide them. Let people see the real you — warts and all. Being your authentic self when you’re not embracing your quirks can be hard to do. It’s important that for your authentic self to thrive and become a better person, you need to embrace what makes you unique.

Let go of Perfectionism
You’re not perfect and that’s okay. Accepting your flaws and imperfections is an important part of being authentic. A little self love goes a long way in seeing the inner and outer aspects of perfectionism. When you’re more aware of how you’re putting too many demands on yourself, it’s easier to have an authentic life.
Don’t Compare Yourself
Stop comparing yourself to others. This is bad for your mental health. This is a surefire way to lose sight of your authentic self. You are on your own journey, so focus on your own path. Examine family belief systems to ensure you’re not repeating behaviors or falling into the ‘same old trap’ when trying to be your true self.
Embrace Change for a More Meaningful Life
Change is inevitable, so don’t fight it. When you’re open to change and have a deep sense of who you are, it’s easier to stay your true self. Most of us hate change, while others embrace it. Remaining your whole self during this time of transition is extremely important to cultivate genuine relationships.
Practice self-compassion
Be kind and understanding towards yourself and try not to bring yourself down with negative thoughts. This will help you weather the trials of life with grace and ease. In doing this, you’re not only being compassionate to yourself, but you’re ensuring you remain self aware and true to your authentic self.
