How to be Mentally Healthy and Happy by Stopping the Hustle and Burn-Out
Working hard isn’t worth compromising your mental health

In modern-day and age, hustling became synonymous with traditional work. We are not just “workers” anymore; we are “hustlers.” We work hard, make money, advance, achieve our goals — and hustle even more. Often — at the expense of sleep and emotional balance.
While self-development and career are crucial, it’s also critical to take care of your emotional health and ensure you aren’t burning out. Shifting the focus to work is a great choice, yet happiness should also be on the very top of the priority list.
What is Burnout and How it Affects Us
Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands (source: Helpguide.org). By getting burnt out, the individual can lose motivation to work, achieve their goals and function daily. It is quite a dangerous state to be in, both physically and mentally.
A recent study from Gallup indicated that 28% of millennials reported constant burnout at work — a higher percentage compared to the 21% of baby boomers. On top of that, 45% of millennials indicated an occasional feeling of burnout. Burnout has been named an official diagnosis by the World Health Organization, but it’s not classified as a medical condition.
It’s crucial to address the exhaustion and depletion of energy, as it’s a health hazard. If you think you might be experiencing burnout, consider taking a self-test and speaking to a medical specialist.

We All Hustle
Regardless of what your lifestyle is, we all hustle. It’s not just those who have multiple obligations or chose to balance work and family experience burnout. You can fall victim to it if you have a regular 9 to 5 job, or if you are staying home with children, or even if you’re working on the most inspiring project of your life. Burnout is also applicable not only to those who dislike their environment but to people who cherish their jobs and love their lifestyle.
We all deserve to be happy, and there is no need to compromise it by leading imbalanced lives to the point of burnout.
Finding the Balance and Implementing Changes are the Key
You don’t need to exhaust yourself to figure out life. It’s essential to find a healthy balance and maintain it. Take a time-out and review your lifestyle — ask yourself the following questions:
- What is causing the burnout?
- How long have the burnout been affecting you, and did it become worse recently?
- What can you do to minimize or entirely remove the causes?
- If you cannot remove the causes, what adjustments can you complete to decrease the stress?
- Is your environment affecting your health and causing the burnout?
- Can you remove yourself from that environment or make changes to it to reduce the anxiety level?
- Is it possible to make radical changes such as switching jobs or activities if the burnout continues?
Sacrificing your health is not the answer. Burning out at work or school is a serious issue you need to address. Many times, you are capable of implementing changes in your daily lives to help you reach a healthy balance. You should identify the problems and do your best to resolve or minimize them.
Happiness is a Journey
We all want to be happy, and happiness is different for all of us. There is no right way to reach the feeling of joy — every single person has their own path. However, getting to the point of burnout is not the way to achieve happiness.
Happiness often comes with peace of mind. Stress causes the opposite feeling. To be at peace, we need to ensure our mind isn’t clouded by stressful thoughts or anxiety. We all deserve to be happy, and there is no need to compromise it by leading imbalanced lives to the point of burnout.
