How to Balance Your Time as A Creator

Limited hours, and so many tasks.

One of the biggest challenges that is faced as a full time creator is time management.

It does not matter if you are a painter, YouTuber, content creator, or which other creative fields that you embrace, it all takes time.

So today, I want to share a couple tips that I have discovered to help you if you are like me where your brain gets pulled in 500 different directions with your creative endeavors and the day gets away.

Let’s go!

Set out with intent

The first tip that I will share with you is to start every day with intent. Choose one thing that you will do before anything else, and that you will complete until it is done.

The phone will not distract you, the emails, the pets, the kids, etc. It is you and this one task. Think of it as a mission. You MUST complete your mission or else.

I have found that setting my intention before I start a task is extremely helpful. It is incredibly easy to get distracted by browsing socials, the neighbors dog barking, or other things that you ‘think’ would be great to do during your day, but are really not productive.

So if you start out with one task at a time and stick to it, your day will go smoother.

Take breaks

My Dad and my Grandpa both used to say “time to take a coffee break,” and I now understand why more than ever as a full time creator.

It is really easy for us as creators to jump into what is called hyper-focus where one task can consume our day. By setting regular breaks through out your day, you remember to stretch, eat food, drink water, and that you are human.

Sure, it is easy to go until you finish the creation at hand, but then your stomach and your family are both angry with you. So make sure to schedule breaks. Setting a simple alarm on your phone for half hour to hour increments can do the trick. And sometimes we even come back from breaks with clarity on the latest best idea that we have.

Try to plan your week

Lately, I have been trying to plan my week better. There is nothing worse than setting that intention that I made in tip number one, and then oh shit, I forgot that I had a 1pm Zoom meeting that threw a fork in the days plans.

Hence, once per week now I try to sit down with either my notebook or on my digital calendar and plan ahead looking at the time that I have available to me.

And when I am planning for the week, I try to prioritize the tasks that are making me money right now first instead of the ones that I want to do. I do tend to mix the ones that I want to do as sprinkles on the cake through out the week though also. We must have balance.

On this note also, I will add to make sure that your plans can be in flux in case that Zoom meeting goes overtime, or there is some form of world-ending emergency in the house/studio that needs attending to. There is nothing worse than the plumber dropping by, and your dog chasing him trying to get attention and mark the plumber as his territory while you are trying to block out the world and ignore it all because you blocked in your time too tight.

Be kind to yourself

This is one that I am personally trying to be better at. We have to remember that at the end of every day no matter if we accomplish all of our tasks or not that we are only humans. Remember to be kind to yourself.

I imagine it like this. While I have a website client that I am coding for, if I don’t get all of the site done in one day, it is easier to get down on myself than to say oh well, and hit the time clock for the day til tomorrow.

Lately I have been calling it the days reset button. Every night when I spend time with my family after I hard stop at my scheduled stop time for the day, I hit the invisible reset button before sleep. It does not matter if I am angry at myself or other things outside of my control for the day, it all gets reset, and tomorrow is a new day where I will try again.

And Finally

I’ll leave you with these thoughts in this piece today. Some days are going to be shit. That is the honest truth. Some days are going to be Donkey Kong got it goin on days, and they put us on an emotional high. Just remember balance though.

As a creator we need the balance. To somehow take the good, the bad, and the ugly and to let it roll off our shoulders for the biggest secret ever:

To continue.

Yep, to continue is the real answer to it all as a creator. The best creation that we will ever make is what we will make tomorrow.

And with me as I am navigating website creation, mentoring, book writing, t-shirt designs, music production, paintings, and more at the moment, tonight I will hit that reset button and get up excited to do it all again tomorrow.

If you are like me and share some of these thoughts, I would love to hear about it in the comments below. After all, creators gotta create, and we all have to stick together.

Until next time.
