s” and 114 “reads.” Not exactly overwhelming. On the other hand, a piece of fluff titled “Wedding Shower” that really has no literary value whatsoever (falling into the category I would call “crappy”) got . . . get this . . . 1.4 K (that’s thousand!) views and 1.2 K reads! How can this be? I thought quality trumped quantity (although “Wedding Shower” could hardly be said to fall into the category of quantity being a 1 minute read. Oh. I get it. I suppose what’s meant by quantity is lots and lots of pieces that take 1 minute to read. Another piece I wrote that I would not “pin” as something I’m particularly proud of was “The Rock,” garnering 543 views and 400 reads. Most other pieces have been getting between 9 and a couple of hundred views. Nothing spectacular like my most successful stupid “Wedding Shower!”

<img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:

How To Attract Thousands Of Readers

In the months (8) since I’ve been affiliated with Medium, I have been trying to figure out what makes one essay worthy of being curated and what guarantees a zillion followers and thousands of “reads.” The first thing I ever wrote was for the contest that awarded a sizable monetary prize (which I didn’t win) but the essay did get curated. That was the 1st and last time. Since then I’ve written about 50 some pieces, some good and some crappy, and to my surprise there seems to be no logic or reason behind numbers or acknowledgement in the form of curation. For example: my curated piece was titled “To Lose You A Little Less,” and it only got 141 “views” and 114 “reads.” Not exactly overwhelming. On the other hand, a piece of fluff titled “Wedding Shower” that really has no literary value whatsoever (falling into the category I would call “crappy”) got . . . get this . . . 1.4 K (that’s thousand!) views and 1.2 K reads! I’m glad I have a day job!

Oh. And what does the photograph under the title have to do with this piece? Nothing at all. I just happen to like it. It’s where I live.
