How To Ask… So You Can Receive.
2 ideas you have heard before. 1 story you haven’t.
We are all familiar with the famous Bible quote:
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
— Matthew 7: 7–8
I am sure, also, that most of us, in one way or another, have tried “asking” for what we want but have missed out on the “receiving” part of the equation.
I also want to add that Jim Rohn said in one of his lectures, and I am sorry that I can not find the reference, that we need to ask “intelligently”.
So how do we ask intelligently?
Here are a few suggestions for you to give a try, and one cool story for you to read…
One — Journalling
What is it you want? Really. Have you taken the time to think about it and write about it?
What would a perfect partner look like? What would a perfect day in your new perfect life look like? Who would be there with you? Who would be absent?
Write about it in your journal so you can look back on your thoughts in a month, year, or even a decade.
Two — Goals. And the story you need to read!
Here is a story for you from Jim Rohn’s book called: Seven Strategies for Wealth and Happiness. It is a bit long, but worth the read. The point of the story is you need to have goals.
‘One morning, two weeks after I started working for him, Mr. Shoaff [Jim’s mentor] and I were having breakfast together. Just as I was about to finish my eggs he said, ‘Jim, let’s take a look at your list of goals so that we can review and discuss them. Maybe that’s the best way I can help you right now.
But I don’t have a list with me, I replied. Well, is it in your car or at home somewhere? No sir, I don’t have a list anywhere. Mr. Shoaff sighed. Well, young man, looks like this is where we’d better start.
Then looking directly into my eyes, he said, ‘If you don’t have a list of goals, I can guess your bank balance within a few hundred dollars.’ He guessed right. And that really got my attention.
I was astonished. ‘You mean that if I had a list of my goals my bank balance would change? I asked.
‘Drastically’, he said.
That day I became a student of the art and science of goal setting. Of all the things I’ve learned since those early days, goal setting has had the most profound effect on my life. Every aspect of my existence — my accomplsiments, my income, my bankbalance, my life style, my donations, and even my personality — changed for the better.
— Jim Rohn
Is it any wonder I am a student of goal setting as well?
One final quote from my mentor, a man that I have never met in person, but I know him as well as any other man I have shaken hands with.
“Asking is the beginning of receiving. Make sure you don’t go to the ocean with a teaspoon. At least take a bucket so the kids won’t laugh at you.”
— Jim Rohn
All the best to you my dear readers… Max
