How To Apply Bible Verses To Your Life On A Regular Basis
A practice in renewing your mind
It’s time for a new journal!
This is one of my most favorite things to do in life, break in a new journal. I love it because I love starting things. And, I love to prep my new journal with a few important things before I start using it regularly.
When I need to start a new journal, there are a few steps I take. Each one helps me in the moment and then provides me with things to strengthen myself in the Lord later when life is hard.
Here is a quick list of what I do:
- Write my name in the journal with my phone and email.
- Add impactful Bible verses first.
- Add words from God next.
- Then I add a list of good things that have happened this year.
- Lastly, I put in goals or dreams I have for the current year.
Now, I put these things in the front for a few reasons. The first one is because I want to make them easily accessible for times of trouble. Whether it’s something hard that has happened or something going on in the world.
The second reason is how important it is to review these things every month. If it’s in the front, I will never lose them in the mix of everything else.
Today, I want to share with you why it’s important to review your impactful Bible versus monthly.
Bible Verses to the Rescue
For years, I found myself bouncing between seasons of extreme joy and seasons of extreme stress. These times in my life were so frustrating. And for years, I thought this was just how the “Christian” life was going to be. After all, this was what had been shown to me in my early life with Christ.
About a year and a half ago, I read a book called Strengthen Yourself in the Lord: How to Release the Hidden Power of God in Your Life by Bill Johnson. In this book, I found ways to combat those down seasons in life. I started to understand that we could experience joy, even when things were hard.
One of those ways was keeping scripture that has particularly impacted your life with you everywhere you go. While I had kind of done this for years, it was the application part I didn’t understand.
How to Connect Scripture to our Lives
I believe that scripture that impacts us once will truly stick with us all of our lives. The important thing that many people miss is how to apply scripture to our lives. I have found that it can take a little time. However, below are a few steps that I take to help apply scripture to my life.
- Keep scripture present. Often times, I will write down something that seems particularly impactful on a note card and carry it around with me. Or I will write it down and tape to my car, desk, or even save it as the background to my phone. It is present all the time.
- Meditate on scripture. Now, it is not enought to simply have scripture with you. I have found that when I meditate on it, that it begins to change the way I think, remenicent of Romans 12:2. Sometimes I practice this by reading it outloud two or three times a day.
- Memorize scripture. I have to admit that this has always been hard for me. However, when I complete the first two steps it has become much easier. When we memorize scripture, it will begin to come to us in the moments we need it in life.
How to Apply Scripture to our Lives
Applying scripture to our lives doesn’t have to be difficult. What I have learned is there are two main ways we can apply the Bible to our lives. These two ways focus on action and thought.
- Action-based application. I have learned that some scripture is about changing the actions in our lives. Sometimes, the Bible can give us clear direction on things to do. For example: love your neighbor. Matthew 22:39
- Thought-based application. This is more about the way you think. When we read the Bible, it isnt always about doing, sometimes it is about understanding. For example: Seated with Christ. Ephesians 2:6
Now, I understand that action-based application is still impacted by thought-based. But it is easier to understand and do something with an action. However, this is why we renew our minds with scripture, so that we can take action and understand who we are in Jesus.
Final Thoughts
Connecting and applying scripture in your life doesn’t have to be hard. It also doesn’t have to be an overly spiritual task. Sometimes, it is simple and practial and it pays spiritual dividends.
In so many instances in my life. I find myself going back to these scripture that have connected with me in the passed. They have guided me through uncertain times, encourged me when I was discouraged, and help me see who I am in Jesus when I felt like I lost my way.
