How Strangers Rewarded a Woman’s Honesty by Gifting a New Car to Her

She found a cash bag with $14,780 and returned it to the owners

Being honest in a selfish and competitive world is a rare virtue.

Some people act honestly in a consistent manner no matter nobody is looking. They cherish honesty as their core virtue and never stray from it, notwithstanding the temptations to take advantage of a favourable situation. They don’t expect any approval or recognition for being honest.

The universe, however, has a way to reward goodness unexpectedly. Rewarding honesty reinforces people’s faith in humanity and encourages virtuous behaviour all around.

Here’s a heartwarming story of how honesty got its due, thanks to the kindness of strangers.

Dianne Gordon, 65, lived in White Lake Township, Michigan. She worked at the deli counter of VC’s Fresh Marketplace in Waterford Township, which was about 3 miles away from her home.

She used to drive to work in her jeep, which broke down a year ago. Her car couldn’t be fixed and she could not afford to buy a new car. So, she started walking to and from the office, five days a week, which took about an hour daily.

On January 21, she was walking home in the cold evening and entered a gas station to have a snack. As she opened the door, she noticed a bag lying on the ground. She picked it up and saw that it contained a lot of cash. She said,

“I just looked at it, and I knew it wasn’t mine. I knew what I needed to do.”

She went inside and called the police. An officer arrived soon and collected the bag.

Within two hours one police officer called Gordon and informed her that they had tracked the bag’s owners. It was a young couple who had gotten married on the day.

The Police Chief Dan Keller of the White Lake Township Police Department said,

“There were wedding cards with a name on it, and we were able to get the money back to them. She didn’t hesitate, she didn’t question it. This doesn’t happen very often, that someone finds a large sum of money and turns it in.Some people would do that, and some people wouldn’t. She didn’t give it a second thought.”

Keller said the newlywed couple was overwhelmed with gratitude by Gordon’s honesty. Gordon said she did not do anything extraordinary. She said,

“If it doesn’t belong to you, you don’t keep it. I didn’t do anything special. All I did was return something that didn’t belong to me.”

As news about Gordon’s honesty spread, some people decided to reward her.

Stacy Connell, whose husband was the police officer that responded to the initial call, was touched by Gordon’s act and set up a GoFundMe page for her. She said,

“As a police officer’s wife, I typically hear the bad things, so this was obviously heartwarming. I was hoping we could help her get a car, since she could have walked into any dealership and used that money.”

In less than a week, kind strangers contributed over $60,000 and many wrote generous comments praising Gordon.

Gordon was stunned by the kindness of strangers. She said,

“I never expected anything like this. I am overwhelmed. I was just doing what I was taught to do. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of them.”

On February 03, Gordon got the keys to a new green Jeep Compass. Police Chief Keller said the extra funds would be utilised to buying insurance and extended warranty for the car, and for some home repairs. He said,

“I’m truly astounded and overjoyed by the outpouring of love for Dianne. She truly deserves it. We’re going to set her up, so she is good to go for several years.”

Gordon made the first trip in her new car, a 25-minute drive, to visit her two grandchildren.

She is delighted to drive the new car and said she will offer lifts to her co-workers.

Final thoughts

The kindness of strangers has enormous power to transform lives. People donated money to reward Gordon’s honesty and gifted a new car to her, which she badly needed.

We feel immense satisfaction when people appreciate a good act and reward the performer generously.
