How Star Trek Changed My Life

It inspired me to dream bigger and believe in the possibility of a better world

When I read the sad news about Nichelle Nichols passing away this week, I was reminded again about how much Star Trek and its iconic characters taught me so many important life lessons.

Star Trek was very much a product of the 60’s. It was a tumultuous time of change, but also one of hope, love and optimistic thinking. Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry, offered us an idealist future that was exciting, ground breaking, thought provoking and fun.

It was more than a TV show, it was a masterclass in leadership, friendship, courage, tolerance and boldly going into the unknown.

I loved all the characters in Star Trek, but there was something about Communications Officer Lt. Uhura and her calm and professional manner that gave me a role model for how a smart woman could more than hold her own in a bridge full of men.

“Star Trek” began 56 years ago on September 8, 1966. I was 13 at the time and it completely rocked my world. It inspired me to dream of becoming an astronaut or a scientist at NASA.

My brothers and I were fascinated by the show and became ardent fans. When we moved from New Jersey to Southern California my dad offered to take us to a Star Trek Convention in LA. It was an amazing experience to see all the other fans, meet some of the actors and watch the hilarious blooper reels.

My love of all things Star Trek has never died. I’ve seen all the original episodes many, many times and I still like to watch them again when I get the chance. Here’s some of the great standout ones.

Now there are only 3 of the original command team actors remaining. William Shatner (Captain Kirk), George Takei (Sulu), and Walter Koenig (Chekov).

But we still have many new versions of Star Trek to keep the dream alive. I’m enjoying watching the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series right now with a reinvented Captain Pike.

Final Thoughts

No, I did not become an astronaut, but I do love science and techie things and have worked as a technical writer, systems analyst and project manager for engineering and software companies.

And yes, I am a total sci-fi nerd. I’m sure that Star Trek had a lot to do with that :)

Key Message: I know the dreams that Star Trek inspired in me helped me become the woman I am today. And despite all the heavy stuff going on in the world right now, I still believe in that idealistic future world and the hope that it will become reality some day.
