How Spirit Slides In
Life as a Writer
Forward: I am a psychic channel and often talk to folk in spirit. In this one, Cecilia, a person I’ve never met, showed up to talk. Her part is in bold italics. Otherwise, it’s me.

Knock knock.
Who’s there?
It’s Cecelia. I heard you were looking for people to write about. I’d like to audition.
Audition? You also must have heard I can’t write.
Well, that’s not what I heard. I heard you don’t give up.
That’s kind. I really can’t write my way out of a paper bag.
That’s cruel. Why do you say things like that about yourself?
It’s a habit. Anyway, you took the time to show up. I’m glad you did. It’s nice to talk to somebody else for a while.
Yeah, we sort of noticed you were settling into binge mode.
Some people call it couch potato.
Well, you’re not sitting on a couch, so I figured binge mode was accurate. Not to change the subject, but are you going to sit here all day?
I need to do my QuickBooks for 2023.
How’s that going for you?
Not really good.
What’s the problem?
I’m afraid.
Yeah, I heard about that too.
Jesus, what do you guys talk about?
You.
You could be talking about the war in Ukraine. You could be talking about the life-changing antics of political people.
Well, they have an inordinate amount of control over how you can live your life.
I’ve been thinking of becoming a witch.
Why?
I could send a case of piles to the orange-haired one.
You know that’s beneath you.
It would be beneath him, too.
You could title a book of political witchcraft “Where the Piles Grow.”
You’re funny, Cecilia. How old are you anyway?
We’re all about 30 years old. There are the younger ones, too, but they get to grow up and finish what they didn’t get to do on Earth. I’m 27 years old right now. You know the old saying, “You’re as young as you think you are.”
What else do you do?
I can do anything. I like to watch music.
Do you mean people playing?
No, I mean watch colors make sounds.
That’s a thing?
It’s like standing in the forest at Yosemite. Or, if you were at the Grand Canyon. You can hear the air move.
You could be like a superhero in a book. Nymph spirit during the day flings pizza at night.
That sounds like fun. I could solve mysteries, too.
When I look at Weberbooks.com every day, there are always lots of private investigator stories that seem popular. If an author is going to introduce the paranormal into it, mostly it’s always sort of witchy.
Seth said early on that people would think you are a witch.
Well, technically, it’s a witch wanna-be.
Can you do witchy stuff?
The tip of my finger lit up once. I don’t think I did it. Once, I saw smoke coming out of the end of it. I don’t think it was really smoke. It didn’t smell. I think it was sort of like an aura floating around. I think the only time I felt like I had control over anything was with Reiki. I could feel the energy moving through my hands. It wasn’t much, but other Reiki practitioners said I was hot. I’ve heard of QiGong practitioners creating balls of energy and throwing them out into the audience. I also did, what’s it called when you can sense information through an object?
Psychometry.
Right. When I went to that James Van Praagh lecture, he had us turn around and partner up with the people sitting behind us. That lady and I exchanged our keys. We both sensed each other were writers. I sensed she was into food. She said she was a chef. It was pretty cool. Cecelia, can I ask you something?
Sure.
When did you die?
Which time?
Well, the last one.
It was at the end of World War II. I was pregnant and died while giving birth. My baby didn’t survive either. Times were hard then. They kept being hard for the next 60 years. After that, there were more wars: the Korean War and Vietnam. It seemed like it was never going to be over. Since then, there have been even more wars. It just doesn’t end. You’ve got war, and then you’ve got to recover from war. Then, there is more war. It’s a lot to take in. What you don’t hear about a lot of the time is how brave everybody is. People can be brave even when they don’t think they could ever be brave. You know that old saying, “That was too close for comfort”?
Yeah.
Guess when they started saying that? I can tell you don’t want to talk about that.
No, I suppose not.
What would you like to talk about?
Well, I’m trying to be encouraging and motivational. The problem is that I’m not always that way.
Well, you’ve got mental issues that run in your family. Everybody has them, and they go way back. People cope. They force themselves to be cheerful and productive.
I guess that’s what I’m doing.
Yep. That’s why there’s a line heading out the door of people here who’d like to be in your stories. Never, ever think that you can’t find somebody to talk to you. And not just for a little bit. Daniel is waiting patiently. I know you want to be an expert in the things of that time for his story to be told, but you don’t have to be — just a little bit. And you have personal experience of what it is like to talk to folk in spirit and live a normal life, too.
Yeah, last night when I made us a frozen pizza, Seth suggested I set the timer at ten minutes, put on the extra cheese then, and let it bake the remaining 13 minutes after that. I wouldn’t have thought of that.
Well, you just didn’t get around to it. Whether you think of it or not does not matter. It’s like dancing. There is the official box step, and then there is do what you want. The most important from my point of view is that you just sway to the music. You don’t have to be an acrobat or a ballerina. It’s important to reflect the rhythm in your moves, to feel the music flowing through you. Once you have that down, you can apply the feeling to any number of other pursuits like you could become one with an overripe tomato and see which parts of it want to be cooked or whether you should just plant a few seeds to see what happens.
Hmmm. It’s actually been on my mind to see if I could raise a tomato plant.
Right, you could become one with the forest or, in your case, the tomato.
I think the jade plants wouldn’t be good neighbors.
I’m sure they’d say you listen but don’t respond easily.
I think they must need some water. Cecelia, it just occurred to me. Would you like to be in Daniel’s story?
I thought you’d never ask. We’ve already talked about it. I would be pleased.
I don’t think other writers audition their characters quite like that.
Maybe more do than you think. Spirit slides in; however, it can sometimes.
Afterword: I asked Dennis if he knew of a Cecelia. He said he had an Aunt Cecilia. She had something to do with his father. He said he wrote a thank you letter to her once when he was a little boy and wrote her name as Aunt Seal because he didn’t know how her name was spelled.
Thanks for reading.
