How Pausing Can Change Your Spending
Untangle Impulse Buying with This Simple Trick

Ever walk into a store for milk and leave with a cart full of ‘bargains’ you didn’t need? Or the late-night online shopping spree fueled by a fear of missing out (FOMO) on the latest gadget? We’ve all been there.
We succumb to the allure of a product that is well-advertised and promoted.
After thorough research and consideration, we tell ourselves it’s time to reap the rewards of our decision-making by purchasing the chosen product.
So, how do we combat our innate impulsive buying urges?
A few years ago, I found myself wanting to buy a shiny new PC. I did my research and decided on the brand. However, life got in the way, I got busy with another project and had to travel.
Before I knew it, 50 hours had passed, and the urge to buy that new PC had magically subsided.
That’s when I realized: delay isn’t denial, it’s wisdom disguised as inconvenience. That’s when I started to act on the 24-hour rule.
It’s a deceptively simple concept: hold off on any purchase (big or small) for 24 hours. It’s not about denial, as I like to tell myself, it’s about giving your brain time to cool down and assess the situation with logic rather than passion.
Since adopting the 24-hour rule, I’ve lost count of how many potential purchases I’ve forgotten about.
The products that passed the rule are now integral to my daily life.
Lately, I’ve been implementing the 24-hour rule before clicking the publish button on my articles.
But this isn’t just my story. Studies show that a staggering 80% of us struggle with impulse buying, leading to financial woes and buyer’s remorse.
Is your credit card crying out for help? Give it a breather with the 24-Hour Rule. Your impulse-prone self will thank you (eventually).
