How One Conversation Changed My Life — Forever
The importance of tuning into our higher consciousness.

The unmistakable aroma of puff the magic dragon drifted like small clouds through the air.
Posters of Jim Morrison and Racquel Welch taped to the cinder block walls of the college dorm room looked down approvingly at the joint being passed between my friend and me as we got wasted to the warm voice of Cat Stevens singing "Where Do The Children Play?"
"Do you believe in God?" I asked my friend.
He took a long hit off a big doobie and smiled.
Brad, part American Indian, had shoulder-length brown hair and a full beard, looking like the rock musician Leon Russell — the epitome of hip coolness in my book.
Me? I was on my way from being a shy, uncomfortable high school kid into the person I had yet to discover. The writings of Herman Hesse, D.H. Lawrence, Ken Kesey, and Ram Dass lit up my path.
Brad let the smoke out of his lungs and said, "I believe in a life force."
A life force.
Those words filled my twenty-year-old brain with curiosity. I looked at Brad in awe, like he'd just revealed the secret sauce to eternal life.
"Yeah, man. A life force. Universal energy. That's what I believe."
We listened to the rest of Tea For The Tillerman, and I quietly pondered what this life force was and how to find it.
I believe this conversation activated a sleeper cell with me programmed to seek higher consciousness.
It worked because eighteen months later, I found my way to an Indian guru and learned how to go within and connect to — my life force.
And since then, an unrelenting thirst to know the higher self has been my companion. And as I reflect over the past few years of this journey, it's easy to see my life has been more satisfying and peaceful when the connection to this universal energy has been consistent.
And, when I've drifted off course, I've had more challenging times. But maybe that's part of the journey — drift off, learn the hard lessons, and return to the spiritual path with more appreciation. Whatever the reasons for the digressions might be, this has been my path.
The importance, power, and majesty of our higher consciousness rocked my world even more recently because a few days ago, I experienced a methodology called Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, QHHT. It's a way of activating the healing power of our life force. I'm still processing what happened and will write about it in more detail soon.
It opened a new door to higher consciousness I didn't know existed.
The experience reminded me that we aren't alone. Our higher consciousness is there, watching, guiding, supporting, and encouraging us to go within. From the stillness, it calls us to be still, listen, and feel its presence.
The takeaway
So, what's the point of all of this?
Perhaps a gentle reminder that we are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual beings and the importance of paying more attention to our spirit.
We give plenty of attention to our physical bodies, and we know the importance of taking care of our mental and emotional health. In addition, we spend plenty of time staying in touch with the world around us, watching the news, and checking social media.
What about our spirit? How much attention do we give to our spiritual self?
I know I can give my spirit more attention — it's easy for me to get distracted, cut my meditation practice short, or get hooked by the voice in my head that tells me my to-do list is more important than anything else.
That's why the few minutes I aside each day to do nothing other than connect with my higher self are precious.
After fifty years of meditation, I know that the more I lean into my inner world, the more I allow my higher consciousness to positively influence my everyday life, health, and well-being. So why don't I do it even more?
I don't want to be a slave to my ego and endless whims and random thoughts.
I want a life rich in spirit.
And I know the more I give to it, the more it gives back to me.
All I have to do is choose each day to practice what I know works.
The life force will take care of the rest.
