How Often Do I Use Spirituality In A Day
And still enjoy life as it comes
“God get me out of this and I will never do it again!” “God, I prayed to you every Sunday, Christmas, and Easter so why do bad things keep happening to me?” “God, I joined a church and became an usher, and everything and problems still haunt me!”
Just what makes me think that an hour or so a week thinking good thoughts and trying to do right will carry me through the week? Or even through the rest of the day?
Before learning about my inborn spirituality, to me, God was in male, humanized form sitting “up there in the sky” on a golden throne making judgments about whether I went to heaven or hell, lived or died, was happy or sad.
Spirituality teaches us that our Higher Power, or God, is inside each one of our hearts and souls, not “out there in heaven somewhere.” We can also call our Higher Power anything that we choose.
You can call your Higher Power God, Allah, Prophet, Buddha, the Sun, the Moon, or even make up a name. The important thing to know is that your Higher Power, no matter what It is called, is the same energy source but with a different title.
During my life, I have been called James, Jim, Jimmy, Boss, Sergeant, Chief, and many more. Some more and some less flattering. The thing to remember is that they all refer to me, the source of their attention at that particular time.
It is our own personal Higher Power. Some new to AA think of their AA group as their Higher Power, and it is. Did you ever wonder when leaving an AA meeting, why you left feeling better than when you entered?
It is because of what has been said and/or done there. Now comes the hard part — how do I keep these good feelings about myself and others flowing regularly, not just during church or AA meetings?
The AA 3rd Step says “Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.”
Spirituality tells us to go back to the 3rd Step whenever we are feeling either too high or too low or even if we don’t know just how we are feeling. You do not have to be an alcoholic to practice this Step. It applies to everyone because it involves our thinking, not our drinking.
The AA 11th Step says “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”
Every morning, before entering your busy day, try using the 11th Step, asking only for the knowledge of His will for you and the power to carry it out.
His will for you is to be Happy, Joyous, and Free, not full of problems. I get this good feeling by asking for help regularly throughout every day, not just on Sunday morning and/or at AA meetings.
How do I do it? I use the shortened version of the 3rd Step to answer this. I humbly say “God, Help Me” then get out of His way and let Him.
This shortened version helps me to remember daily, not just weekly, that I am a Spiritual Being living in a Spiritual Universe, that is governed by Spiritual Law. I AM an individualized expression of God and One with all that exists.
With all of this good going on for me and others, how can I fail? When I say that this can work for you too, no matter how long or short you have been in the program, it is absolutely true. Just say “God, Help Me” and let Him.
Thank you, God!
