How NOT To Treat Clients As A Freelancer

A couple of days ago, I joined a Telegram group dedicated to social media managers. As I was scrolling through the chat, I came across a message that got my attention, hence the title for today.

People cursed out or called out a guy in the group for his bad behavior. Let me explain the situation further so that you get the gist here.

This lady, also a member of the group, introduced the guy to a potential client. Now he offered to create Facebook ads for this client. The client then forwarded some cash to him to set up the Facebook ads for her. What did this guy do, you might ask? He used that money for laptop repairs instead.

When the client asked about his progress, he had nothing to show for it. The lady who introduced him to that client exposed him in the chat and asked him to refund the cash. He had an uncaring attitude and shared a private chat with one of his buddies, where they were mocking the client and girl instead of admitting to his fault.

That is just plain wrong. You and this client already had an agreement. Now, there is a debate regarding whether a written contract was ever in place.

Talking about toxic clients is one thing, but we often ignore toxic freelancers or workers.

What are the typical traits of a toxic freelancer? 1 They refuse to take responsibility 2 They exploit their clients 3 They do not stick to time 4 They steal money budgeted for certain tasks and use it for something else 5 Zero contract or proper arrangement with client 6 Poor communication 7 Badly optimized social media profile 8 Constantly complains about everyone and everything 9 Steals content that was never truly theirs 10 Blatant plagiarism

Sounds familiar? Are you guilty of these? Now what is the downside of the above example I just posted?

  • The lady who outsourced the work will have her reputation tainted - The guy will get kicked out of the group and he may get shamed and blacklisted once word gets out on social media - The client’s business suffers thanks to that guy’s negligence

Now you know why certain companies in some countries refuse to work with people from some countries like Nigeria. These business owners had an unpleasant experience with Nigerians like this guy.

I did not understand that last point until this incident came to light. It all makes sense now. That does not mean we should give up. But, it is important that people see this so that they understand what to do and what not to do in a business setting.
