How Not To Suck at Parenting

Or how to pretend that you know what you are doing

Photo by Julian Hochgesang on Unsplash

Ok, this title will probably make some rounds of controversy before we even go into details, but let’s give it a try.

Just for the sake of the topic, I am personally invested in the subject matter as a parent of two, One smart-ass 6 years old, and One gorgeous 2 years old.

But before I even try to go into details, first we need to define things.

What is Parenting?

On Wikipedia they are explaining the term like this:

Parenting or child rearing promotes and supports the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the intricacies of raising a child and not exclusively for a biological relationship.

Hold on, did they say intricacies? What do they mean by intricacies?

А detail that is part of something complicated.

Yep, that is one way of defining parenting, and I’m sure most of you parents out there will agree on that one.

Parenting can be a demanding and tough process, both mentally and physically. Especially when you need to carry your kids around, put their strollers 100 times per day in and out of your car, try to explain that No, they don't need that toy from the shop today, and collect all their million toys each and every day so you can walk safely through your home.

But in any case, all of this fades away as soon as you see your child's smile and you instantly forget about all their daily shenanigans.

General Parenting Guidelines

First of all, we need to be clear that there is no magic stick or golden rule on how to be best at parenting, as every child is their own character and has a separate story of its own. But on a general note, there are some guidelines to which we need to stick in order to give our best as parents.

So let’s see some general tips on parenting and how they can help us as parents so We won’t suck at it:

  • Set clear boundaries and consequences: Let your child know what you expect of them and the consequences if they do not follow the rules. One example is that you won’t allow them to touch the new Nintendo Game if they don't eat their peas.
  • Be consistent: Follow through with the boundaries and consequences you have set. Inconsistency can confuse and frustrate children. If you are not consistent and straightforward yourself, you cannot expect your child to be as well.
  • Show affection: Hug, kiss, and tell your child that you love them often. Showing affection helps children feel secure and loved. You should never get enough of this as they grow fast. Before you know it, they will reject your daily dose of kisses as full-grown-ass teens.
  • Spend quality time with your child! Please make time to do things together that you both enjoy, whether it’s playing a game, going for a walk, or having a conversation. This is an essential part of building a healthy bond between the parent and the child. This also affects the neural connections while they are still in their early development.
  • Listen to your child: Take the time to listen to your child when they have something to say, even if at that point it sounds stupid and unimportant, and show that you value their thoughts and feelings.
  • Be a role model: Children learn by example, so practice the behavior you want to see in your child. So I want them to build affection for sports activities and cycling and I also practice this by myself almost regularly.
  • Be patient: One of the toughest, especially when you want to make them eat their healthy dose of lunch or dinner. Parenting can be challenging, and it’s important to be patient with your child as they learn and grow.
  • Take care of yourself: Make sure you are taking care of your own physical and emotional well-being, as it will enable you to be a better parent. You need to make sure you are healthy mentally and physically so you can be there to offer healthy support to your child when needed.
  • Encourage independence: Give your child the opportunity to make choices and take on responsibilities appropriate to their age. It will help them develop self-esteem, confidence, and independence. Ask them to choose clothes or shoes and let them roll with them.
  • Show empathy: Try to understand your child’s perspective and feelings, and help them develop empathy for others. It is important for the child to develop the empathy aspect, as this is one way of conceptualizing the world they belong to and how to position themselves in it.
