How Not to Let Others Determine Your Self-Worth Based on Social Media
Why You Should Stop Basing Self-Worth on Your Social Media Numbers
Many of us measure self-worth based on whether others “approve” of us or not.
So when we perceive that we are not getting the validation we seek, we feel unappreciated, unloved and unwanted.
We start to feel lousy about ourselves.
Indeed, we create stress when we tie self-worth to approval ratings that don’t make sense.
For instance, we can mistakenly be measuring worth based on a vanity metric.
It was exactly what happened to me when I first started with social media marketing on Facebook years ago. I would feel embarrassed that I had fewer “likes” or engagement on my posts. I felt as if I was less important and that my work and therefore, my worth, mattered less.
Until one fine day, I realised that this is no way to live.
What You Need to Know
Great question to ask yourself…
If someone else has more “likes” on his or her social media posts, does this make you less worthy or “good enough”?
The answer is clear.
I found out that content aside, the “popularity” of social media posts is often a function of algorithm, advertising and how much marketing a person has done for them. It has nothing to do with whether we are valuable as a person or not.
Hence, it would be silly for us to base our emotions on some social media stats.

The truth is that we are already valuable, no matter what.
Whatever the circumstance is, it would help us to reconnect with the deep knowing that we are already enough.
In fact, if we reconnect to the divinity of who we are, we may just realise how infinite we are.
Shift from “Low” Self-Worth to Soul Awareness
Sure, we may sometimes feel down when others fail to give us the votes that we need. We want to know that we matter. However, any feelings of “less than” or craving for approval offers us the feedback that we could be operating from ego.
We can learn to take things less personally. Also, we can choose to remind ourselves of our inherent value. Self-worth is fundamental. It is not something that needs to be proven. Most certainly, our worth is not dependent on whether others validate us or not — even outside social media.
Meditation is one way that can help us reconnect with wholeness. Through meditation, we are better able to view ourselves through the lens of the soul. We plug into the divine consciousness of our true worth. It is when we can truly recall that we are already enough!
