How Not to Get Lost in Your Own Strategy
Strategic thinking logic
Sixteen years ago, I was sitting in my kitchen in despair. It was a Saturday night, but I had a book on strategy in my hands.
It was a thick, red-covered book that our MBA program professor had recommended we read. I served as a CEO at a privately held company. And I needed to develop a new strategy.
If we judged the quality of a book by word count, the authors would deserve a Nobel Prize.
500+ pages. Lots of 2*2 matrices. Dozens of case studies.
Everything seemed straightforward at first.
But as soon as I turned a page, I would forget what was on it.

I didn’t see or sense the coherent logic of the book — and strategy.
And then, I decided to create a more comprehensible strategy model. I’ve been doing it for years.
You can see the logic of strategic thinking as I view it in the picture.
Of course, that’s not all you need to have a strategy.
But if you adhere to this logic, you’ll eventually have it.
– Begin with your target customers. Who are they? What do they need?
– Which of their needs would we like to fulfill, and why? How will we do it?
– What customer values will we offer them?
– What do we need to do it?
