Summary

Fatima Imam shares her journey of drawing inspiration from nature for her alphabetical fiction series, detailing how daily walks helped her create characters and stories.

Abstract

In a personal essay, Fatima Imam reveals the profound impact that nature has had on her writing process. Over a period of nearly thirteen months, she completed twenty-four stories, attributing her success to the inspiration she found during her walks on the nine-kilometre beltline trail. Imam describes how the natural world not only provided her with the tranquility needed to overcome writer's block but also directly influenced the naming and development of her protagonists. From the resilience of trees to the soothing sounds of fountains, Imam's observations during her walks translated into vivid characters and titles for her fiction series. Despite the challenges of balancing her writing with a job, hobbies, and personal life, especially during the pandemic, Imam found that nature sustained her creativity and mental health, leading to a fruitful literary output.

How Nature whispered the names of the protagonists:

One soulful walk at a time

The richness I achieve comes from Nature, the source of my inspiration. — Claude Monet

Nature sustains us is not a novel fact; enormous data supporting enlightening research confirms how we can thrive through this connection. Like most of you, I’m obsessed with creating a perfect routine where the ideas would flow like a running stream and turn into fabulous compositions. Unlike most of you, I’m lazy and impatient and don’t enjoy staring at blank pages.

In my twenty-two-month journey on Medium, thirty percent of my time has been spent reading posts about writing, creativity, and routines, and I’ve learned a lot from the creative minds here. My daily dose of inspiration comes from following my favorite writers, poets, and kind readers.

To bridle my ambitious writing projects with a regular job, other hobbies, Luke, and a distracted mind, the time spent outside my home is of paramount importance. Before the pandemic, I used to be a great gym enthusiast, therefore, my physical and mental health suffered when everything was shut down in March 2020.

However, the gym closures opened up more time on my schedule to explore the neighborhood, leading to my current obsession with the nine-kilometre beltline trail. In this post, I’m sharing how my daily nature walks help to complete my alphabetical fiction series.

A journey of nearly thirteen months to finish twenty-four stories; the poetic compositions are easier and less time-consuming for me. The process was full of fierce confusion in choosing the right names for the protagonists, apt titles, and subjects.

I go for quick strolls whenever I’m mentally exhausted, leaving my phone as well as the mental fog at home. As nature lovers, you’ll agree with me that walking makes us acutely aware of the majestic trees, magnificent colors, magnetic appeal of the wind, marvellous sunshine, and mysterious presence of so many living beings.

Beatrice (A Blind Date) was the beauty personified, and her image appeared in the shadows of the trees facilitating the story idea within moments. Cassandra Carter’s (Cellar) resilience was quietly conceptualized after observing the perseverance of natural elements during one of the walks.

Sitting on a bench beside a track and field runner inspired me to write about Daisey Dabney’s journey (Dumbbells).

Emma Erickson is another nature-inspired name- the universality of nature, whether we’re on a trail or in a dense forest, made me elaborate on the emotional attributes of the main protagonist in the Ericksons.

Fountains infuse music to my ears and destress me; using Fountain as the last name in Fiery Fatality seemed so natural. During the recent internet outage, the anxious mind was pacified after seeking strength from the mighty skies, and Gabriela seemed an apt name for the Gigantic Downfall’s protagonist.

Henrietta and Harry were real beings, and Hardest Goodbye was based on my experience of being separated from them.

Jenny, a three-year-old heroine of Jinxed, is a perfect example of a blessed and enchanted spirit or a feeling we get after relaxing on a luscious lawn in front of moving water.

Ignoring the social engagements for the upliftment of my spiritual state made me think of Keisha Kempton’s extraordinary intellect to nail the notorious killer.

My protagonists in the Love Story (Part and Part Two) were an ode to lilies, one of my favourite flowers. Nature teaches us to weaponize our energies to combat negativity and forge newer identities, and thus Macey Mueller had those qualities.

Olivia Owen, the main lead of Organs, was the easiest to finalize, paying homage to the marvellous product of nature-olives. Patricia represented the noblest feature of nature and reinforced my faith that every breathing being in the universe has emotions; thus, our protagonist was a perfect fit for Panacea.

Our shameful exploitation of nature will make famine, food shortages, and drought a living reality very soon, and this impending catastrophe has inspired Quiche. Unity, my lead of the Ultimate Utopia, symbolizes harmony in nature. Whitney came naturally into my vision to lead me through the writing process of Water. we drag our distracted minds and disobedient bodies into nature, we become completely peaceful.

Note: Some stories did not have specific names and were told from an omniscient point of view.
