About My First Ever Guest Podcast Appearance — I Talked About Mental Illness and My Memoir

With Nanci Arvizu

We met through a mutual friend. Nanci Arvizu found out about my memoir, read a couple of my bio descriptions* and decided she’d like to chat more. Flattering, right?

She invited me to be on her podcast “Write, Speak, Play” to discuss my memoir. My memoir has been written but is not yet accepted for publication. That’s another topic for another article.

One of my life goals has been to guest on a podcast. Despite my anxiety, I quickly said yes. I mean, this is a life goal of mine. Yes!

Then, I spent several days sweating it and even showed up to our Zoom call two hours early. I’d agreed to also record for YouTube. I’m one of those people who has been changing out of jammies less and less here in the year 2020...devolving into a frumpier and frumpier version of myself.

I put on colorful clothes, brushed my teeth, did my hair, picked an excerpt, took some breaths, listened to some music, and realized I was hella nervous.

When I arrived on time, two hours later, my nerves were a little less, but I was still pretty anxious. Earbuds dangling, my face reflecting back to me from my laptop, I had to mute my brain’s frenzied — You're on a podcast right now. Talking about your memoir. Omg. You’re on a podcast.

Sure, I stuttered, stumbled, ummed and paused at a loss for words some of the time, but overall, I think I got my message across and didn’t say anything I’d regret.

And, I’ll be appearing on more of Nanci’s podcasts to discuss the role of mental illness/mental health in my memoir and my life — and how Nature is one of the easiest and most beneficial tools we can access to help us bring joy back into our lives.

Thank you, Nanci Arvizu, for this amazing opportunity!
