When thinking about this prompt about May, everything I know of the month speaks rebirth and growth to me.

Here in the northern hemisphere, it’s spring. I hear the birds outside again. I see flowers peeking out at me. I’m tilling the soil in my vegetable garden, planting in anticipation of the bounty of eating fresh from my garden.

I think of the month’s birthstone, the emerald, a symbol of fertility and rebirth. I think of the month’s flower, the Lily-of-the-Valley, a symbol of happiness, representing purity, sincerity, and discretion.

Deciding on my focus for May became easy.

I sincerely want my writing to grow and to find readers, believing that this growth is in my hands. Here’s what I’ve been discovering works as I continue my focus this month.

Readers, Followers, & Email Subscriptions

  • Dedicate sufficient time reading others here, meeting new people and engaging with their writing, allowing them to know me better and to discover my writing.
  • Vary where I publish, some self-published, and others in a variety of publications, the outreach connecting me to more people by meeting different audiences.
  • Share my story links on social media, since connections grow when I interact with others.
  • Interact and engage with groups, both here and on social media, meeting even more people that read my stories.

Writing

  • Plan out topics I want to cover, basically having a roadmap that totally eliminates writer’s block.
  • Follow that plan with a block of first drafts that produce writing ready for revision before publishing.
  • Spend more time with my stories before publishing them. Polished writing finds more readers. They appreciate it more since it better offers what benefits them as readers.

After all, that’s what being a writer means to me: making a difference for my readers.
