How Much Self-Control Do You Have?
Regardless, the good news is you can grow it, just like emotional intelligence

How Much Self Control Do You Have?
Self-control and regulation equate to self-mastery in my mind. We all have times when we are better at it than other times. We all face temptation — the question is, do we give in? Self-control is one of the five pillars of Emotional Intelligence.
Self-regulation is the act of managing thoughts and emotions to enable goal-oriented actions such as controlling impulses and problem-solving skills. Like emotional intelligence, it can be improved at any point in life.
How Is Self-Control Established?
- Biology
- Skills
- Motivation
- Caregivers Growing Up
- Environment
All of these factors play into the amount of self-control we exhibit as adults.
The Following factors contribute To How We Respond To Our Triggers
- Lack of sleep
- Toxic Relationships
- Illness
- Stress & Anxiety
Keeping our impulses in check is much easier when we are healthy mentally and physically. When you feel sick, be gentle with yourself. Practice good self-care. When you are in a toxic relationship, practice awareness and try not to distract or self-harm. Protect your energy to self-regulate.
Final Thoughts
Self-control is a form of self-mastery and takes a high level of awareness. It is a way to continue to grow and better ourselves. So, don’t beat yourself up for eating too many chips and salsa when there is an unlimited supply at your local Mexican restaurant. Life is also about enjoyment. But, balance it by eating well at home and not eating out often. Limit your temptations. Practice good self-discipline and motivate yourself with small rewards.
Growing emotional intelligence and self-control will boost our confidence and self-esteem; by doing so, we will have a higher sense of our own value and purpose.
