How Much Money Does It Cost To Self-Publish A Book?

I can’t answer this question in general, but I will tell you what I pay to publish a book.

Self-publishing means that the author is responsible for everything that the publisher would otherwise do. It also means that the author has to pay for everything that the publisher would otherwise pay.

If you think that self-publishing is cheap, you’re wrong. There are genres in which the reader tolerates poor quality (unprofessional cover, spelling mistakes), but these are exceptions.

But if you write in a mainstream genre, your books must be of professional quality. Also, no book will sell without advertising.

All this costs money. In the beginning, new authors often can’t estimate how much they will have to pay. This varies, of course, depending on which cover designer and editor you hire, because everyone has different prices.
