How Much I Made From Kindle Vella Once I Stopped Posting New Episodes
Kindle Vella is still an untapped money pool for writers.
If you haven’t been following my journey, Amazon’s Kindle Vella is a fantastic platform for writers to practice and hone their writing craft. Although the platform fares better with fiction, non-fiction writers have also been making money there.
(If you’re brand new to the platform, look at the links at the bottom of this article to learn more.)
In a nutshell, Kindle Vella is a way to publish your “story” (novel, novella, eBook, etc.) one episode at a time. Think of it like a T.V. show. You gradually reveal each piece of your story, little by little. It’s an extension of the Kindlesphere that competes with other successful platforms with similar formats.
My Vella story is tiny compared to many others, with less than 30 total episodes. There are a good handful of Vella stories that have more than 100 episodes (and are still going)! I wrote mine very part-time over the course of 6 months, publishing it weekly. I spent an average of 1–2 hours of writing per episode. I used the discovery/pantser method and let it go in its own direction.
Vella rewards you with bonus money for consistently posting episodes for your stories, so I knew completing my first one would eventually lead to a drop off in income if I couldn’t find new readers. Note that this is just one requirement for earning money from the monthly bonus pool.
August marked the completion of my first Kindle Vella story. As such, I timed my final episode intentionally on the last day of the month. Although I have a second Vella story in the works, I have held off on publishing it because I wanted to know how much my first story would make without activity.
And the big reveal shows…
With only a few likes and reads in September and no new readers, I still made over $30! This is chump change for some, but it’s more than I make on Medium.

I’ve now made over $400 over the span of 7 months for my first Vella story.
This is more than 3x my lifetime earnings for Medium and in 1/4 of the time.
My first Vella story will continue to make money if I let it sit there, although just a tiny amount now that I’m no longer posting consistently. Unless of course, I find new readers. But those are still hard to come by. Amazon continues to be challenged in this area, although I see them marketing Vella decently well.
My goal is to pull my Vella story out in the new year. I will also do a hard edit and turn it into an eBook under Kindle Unlimited. Under KU I can potentially double-dip and/or earn more since I’ll be tapping into the Amazon eBook audience, which is strong for my story’s genre.
If you’re an aspiring fiction novel writer, I highly recommend you try Vella. It’s easy to use and it will earn you some bank while you’re still getting the hang of novel writing.
Good luck!
