How Much I Earned on Medium by Writing 14 Articles in 30 Days
May is my best earning month since I started writing here

I have been writing on this platform for several months and I can’t say that I am highly successful but I am making a lot of progress.
In my first month on the platform, I earned $2.67, and last month (May) I managed to get to $8.43.

An insignificant amount if you consider the sums people are flashing around but it’s a signal that I am making progress and that the engagement for my articles increased.
So what did I do to increase my earnings and what do I plan to do in the future to make even more?
Consistency is overrated
Being consistent is the only advice you will hear repeated over and over again on this platform. It is true that is the fundamental step everyone has to make, but it is not the most important one.
You can simply write crap over and over again and in the end have no results. Along with consistency you need to put a conscious effort into improving your writing skills.
For me, this meant starting to care more about my headlines, the way I structured my paragraphs, and even the subjects I write about.
You might have been fooled to think that you can write about anything here and you will be successful but in reality, that's false.
It doesn’t matter that your article is of the highest quality possible and you are a Ph.D., people won’t read it if they can’t find it. To find your stories, the topics you write about should be in the area of interest of your possible audience.
The easiest topics to target but the most despicable to write about are about money, earnings, and writing tips related to the platform. Things that are important here, but pretty much useless everywhere else. I have as many as 10 times the views on an article that touches on these subjects relative to a normal article.
What is more reasonable to do, is to write this kind of article you are reading right now from time to time to boost your online presence and to find the sweet spot of writing about something you are passionate about and something people are willing to read.
You can do this by checking for example a topic by a tag, seeing what’s trending, and thinking about how you could dive deeper or write something similar about what seems to be working there.
I believe that these kinds of considerations have to be made to have a chance in the highly competitive environment that Medium has become.
I love writing and I don’t really care about how much I make, but I would like to be paid to work on my passion. I believe this is the feeling that is shared by most aspiring writers and content creators.
Find what works for you
The most important thing I gained by writing here was the opportunity to develop and improve my writing skills. Using my articles on Medium I managed to land clients a freelancers and make some real money.
I think this is far more easily attainable than monetizing your writing here directly, I managed to earn 60$ per article as a freelancer by the first month I started writing here.
Sticking with Medium will most likely bring a lot of opportunities and it will help you to grow as a writer. I think that money shouldn’t be your primary focus, rather you should enjoy the process of writing.
I assume that most of you started writing because you enjoyed the process of writing and you probably wanted to also make some money out of it. Don’t make earnings the main purpose of your writing because you will easily start to hate doing it.
I believe that what will make you capable of overcoming the challenges that might show up if you choose to pursue writing is falling in love with the process of doing it.
Enjoy writing and focus on consistently improving your skills, there won’t be long until you reach your goals.
