The truth about Medium writing

If you are a Medium writer ( or consider becoming one), you must be curious about how much you can earn on the platform. It is entirely natural and reasonable. Although people write for different reasons, we all must pay the bills.

I appreciate it when people share their experiences with writing on Medium. And reading some stories about Medium writing inspired me and helped me to understand the platform.

I also believe in transparency. So if you are interested in earnings, numbers, and statistics, keep reading as I reveal it all.

My Medium journey

I joined Medium in August 2021 but published my first story in December 2021. And I joined Medium Partner Program in January 2022.

Between January and May, I published only five stories. Only one per month. By mid-June, I decided to write and publish one daily story. I knew there would be days due to friend's visits, my temporary lack of mojo, or unforeseen circumstances that I would not stick to my goal.

Therefore I prepared about 14 stories before going on that writing marathon. I am very organized and disciplined, but I am not a robot either. And I thought that the Medium ride should also be enjoyable. Otherwise, what is the point?

That was a remarkable journey of self-discovery and learning some facts about writing on Medium. And I earned some money along the way.

I published 44 stories in total on Medium and 34 out of them in July.

Pubs or self-publishing?

Submitting your stories for publications gives you much better exposure. Especially if you have less than 1 K followers, it is much better to have curated stories.

I published all of my most read stories in different publications. I use self-publishing to keep the flow of the pipeline. Or to post more personal stories.

You may say it is difficult for the beginning writer on Medium to submit stories to publications. I can't entirely agree. I submitted my stories to the publication from the very beginning, including some of the top ones. And only once was my story rejected from publishing.

All you have to do is focus on quality and follow the guidelines. If you require more time and effort, dedicate as much time as possible. It will be so worth it!

Views and reads numbers

There is a close correlation between them. The number of views and reads strongly indicates that algorithms also favor writers publishing frequently.

Naturally, the quality of your stories is the most critical factor. However, I was surprised which stories earned the most money, and I will reveal them at the end of the story.

Audience grow importance

As I mentioned, the number of followers is vital as many Medium writers emphasized a strong correlation between the number of followers and earnings. According to some authors, the minimum number of followers to see increased revenues starts at 1–2 K.

Interact with your followers to increase earnings

Medium is more than a writing platform. It is also a community of like-minded people. It helps the algorithm when you interact with other Medium writers. So read other people's stories, like, comment, and reply to comments.

I read and appreciate comments on my stories. Even if somebody has a different opinion, that is how we communicate and learn here- exchange experience and ideas.

I am genuinely happy to be part of this unique community. I read many stories, which inspire me and help in my profession.

What fascinates me about Medium is that people write and discuss many topics. Practically everyone can find a niche and create unique content with the following.

Share links to your articles below your story

An effective way to increase the number of reads ( and earnings ) is to attach links to your articles below the story. That way, people read more than just one story.

Attach similar stories, and this way, you give a better opportunity to read more of your content. And present your writing not only to your followers but to potential business partners. It is an excellent way of networking as well.

So the time has come, and I can reveal that I earned $113.68 on Medium in July. Story earnings make $111.41, and $2.27 comes from referred member earnings.

That is much better than the previous months. I was earning around $3–5 per month publishing just one story. I will keep on publishing stories daily as it is fascinating to see what topics are winners and which factors are crucial to increasing earnings.

Naturally, I will share my experience and observations with you.
