How Miscommunication Censored A Whole Movement In 1 Day
The dark side of social media

Since the death of George Floyd, Americans across the country have raised their fists and voices as a sign of protest against the institutionalized racism present in America. As peaceful demonstrations continue to develop across the country, people from around the world have decided to have their voices heard and show their solidarity for the American people through the power of social media. However, it less than a day, the spread of misinformation managed to accidentally censor the Black Lives Matter Movement.
#BlackoutTuesday
On Tuesday, June 2nd black squares replaced most of the people’s social media feeds with #BlackOutTuesday being the force behind this. What started as a variation of the #TheShowMustBePaused used in the music business as a way to redress the historical inequities of the music business quickly gained traction across multiple industries with notable celebrities like Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, and Drake going dark on social media as a way to channel people’s attention towards the real problem.
People across the world were eager to join the movement as over 14.6 million Instagram posts were made on Tuesday alone and was the topic of conversation for over 109,000 Twitter users. However, what started as a noble initiative to shift attention towards the real problems of America was hijacked by some social media users who tried to use the traction of the movement for their own personal brand exposure.
Users started using the movement as an easy way to increase engagement rates on their profiles. However, their efforts did not stop there as these same users also incorporated another trending hashtag into their black squares: #BlackLivesMatter
#BlackLivesMatter
With over 16.6 million Instagram posts and 232,000 tweets today, the BlackLivesMatter movement has been present in America for years now. It has been the core message people stood behind to combat systematic racism in America sine 2013 and the face of the protests we are witnessing today.
The hashtag has functioned as a way for believers of the cause to spread their message and have their voices heard. It has allowed millions of people to express their discontent with the system and to share what is happening in the frontline of the protests every day.
By using both #BlackoutTuesday and #BlackLivesMatter in the same post, people were accidentally censoring the most important medium of communication activists around the country rely on to spread their message. Below you can see an example of how the BlackLivesMatter movement was affected by the millions of people who acted without being properly informed about the movement.

As things continue to escalate, it is of utmost importance for people to be properly informed before making any decision. We live in a world where fake news and miscommunication spread at increasingly fast rates and people need to be wary of this. Be it that people acted like this because of misinformation or just for personal gain, it is important to do appropriate research on a topic before making decisions that could impact the lives of those who are still fighting for some of the most basic forms of human rights: The right to live.
