How Mental Simulation Brings You Closer to Your Goals

“The will to win is not nearly as important as the will to prepare to win“- anonymous
A research by Pham & Taylor on mental simulation shows how imagining success during the goal-achieving-process leads to a better and positive self-regulation. They found out that people who mentally simulated the process of doing well on a test actually did perform better.
Because through process simulations…
- your goals seem real or true
- you express greater confidence that the events will actually occur
- you create a state of readiness for action
- you provide a plan of action
- you enhance the emotional or motivational states that facilitate action and decrease hinder action, such as anxiety or worry
So the strategy to achieve your goal is more efficiently through “how I can do it” than just saying “I can do it.”
