How Living With a Person From Another Country Can Help You Overcome Your Limits

Change

As soon as I started living on my own, I realized that covering all the expenses of my little apartment could become quite difficult. l was afraid I could not afford to pay for everything, so I decided to look for a roommate. I was nervous because before then, I had only lived only with my family in a little village, and I didn’t trust other people.

The first girl who came to meet me, and visit the house seemed to be from another planet. She is a Brazilian girl and my prejudices made me expect a sexy girl wearing colorful clothes, with flowers in her hair.

She was just the opposite: blond, blue-eyed, and very thin. Her coat was borrowed, it was clearly not her size. I felt sorry for her. She told me that she left Brazil to come to Italy with her boyfriend, and they broke up. She was desperate and needed a place to stay. That’s when one of the most intense friendships of my life started.

She was so different from me. She went from being very sad, when she used to describe all her emotions in detail while crying, to being very energetic, deciding to clean the house, or cook, or both. Sometimes it was safer to leave.

I remember coming home one evening and finding all the small furniture in the yard because she was cleaning the floor. Another evening, after my courses, I got home at 10 pm, exhausted. She had organized a party inviting all the other Brazilians living in the area, but she forgot to tell me. The entire village could hear the music coming from our house. She was pure energy.

Since she was an artist, one day she decided to test the reaction of different materials if heated in the microwave. The smell lasted for months and she had to buy a new microwave.

Another very funny moment was when we decided to organize a blind date between a shy girlfriend, and a boy she liked. We involved other people of the group to help them relax. Adri, my Brazilian friend, came to the bar wearing a thin slip dress, and she was gorgeous. Everybody was distracted by her body, including the boy. My shy girlfriend could not compete.

There were also very sad moments: the anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s death to her was a day of mourning. She cried all day and there was nothing that could make her feel better.

The first time she saw the snowfall from the sky, she started shouting and running around the house to celebrate it. Her personality was difficult to handle for an introverted person like me, but it was exactly what I needed.

One evening she told me her younger sister was coming to Italy after a big discussion with their mother, and that she was planning to stay at our place, since she had nowhere to go, and no money. She brought all her belongings in our two-room apartment. Now I was overwhelmed with Brazilian energy.

That crazy girl was always there for me, listening to my deepest fears and telling me that she loved me and that everything would be fine soon. She was my chosen family.

The day I told her that my father was sick and that I had broken up with my boyfriend, she burst into tears saying that she had decided to look for a job in a bigger city, and leave our house. Her sister would go with her.

From total chaos, I found myself sitting in silence, eating my dinner alone. No more drama, no more dying her hair at the last minute, leaving stains all over the bathroom. No more smell of delicious Brazilian food. I missed her so much. While her life was improving, because she had found a job she loved and a good salary, I was still there, in my same old life.

Our friendship changed; we no longer live together but we are still close friends.

Thanks to our time together, I became more flexible and resilient, more available to meet new people, and I learned to laugh at myself and my fixed habits. I found out that people who seem to have nothing can offer a lot, and that love has no boundaries.

You never know who is going to step into your life, but you should be open and give everyone a chance to share positive feelings and teach you something new.

You will learn a lot about yourself and make your life more interesting. You will become a better person.
