Retirement
How Large is Your Private Retirement Community?
Huge when compared to my hometown

I live in The Villages, a wonderful private retirement community in Florida. It is so large that it is on the weather map with other local cities on the Orlando TV station. No other retirement community is on that map.
I grew up in Attica, Indiana, which now has 2.9 percent of The Villages population. Nearby Lafayette + West Lafayette is 20,000 smaller than The Villages. Terre Haute, where I went to college, has less than half of the population. Indianapolis and Fort Wayne are the only cities in Indiana larger than The Villages.
To be fair, the population of Attica has dropped about 45 percent since I lived there.
To put things in perspective, not one city in Montana is as large as The Villages. However, Orlando, the nearby home of Disney in Florida, has about three times as many people as The Villages.
The population of The Villages is about 135,000 and growing. It doesn’t seem that large, but the atmosphere feels closer to Attica, my hometown.
