How ‘Know Thyself, Heal Thyself’ Became My Life Topic

My body made me listen to it

Many years ago, I had a career as a mathematician. I conducted research, taught at a university, and ran my own business. It felt like a beautiful and satisfying career. I traveled around the globe, met a lot of people, received a lot of applause, made an impact, and earned well. But after working more than twenty years in this field, everything became routine. Everywhere I went, I felt like I met the same people and had the same conversations about the same topics. I was bored.

Craving a change, I left the university in 2009, closed my business, and shifted my focus to helping people. I started a new business as a mindset coach, hand analyst, and nutritionist. I enjoyed the new challenges in my life and felt invigorated again. However, this time after only two years, everything once again became routine. All of my clients had pretty much the same issues around the four major topics health, love, money, and career. I saw that people are following countless behavioral patterns. They are controlled by programs — mostly the same programs.

I call these programs the “human box.”

In 2011, I started to explore the human box and how to get out of it while continuing with my normal life. I was professionally active, had a relationship, and met family and friends.

In spring 2014, my right jaw began to hurt. I saw my dentist. He said that the teeth are fine and the cause of the pain most probably is the jaw joint. I consulted an osteopath. She confirmed the dentist’s suspicion and suggested four treatments. After the first treatment, the pain was gone. During the three weeks between the first and the fourth treatment I was free of pain. Immediately after the fourth treatment, on the way to my car, the pain returned with the intensity it had before the first treatment. The only reasonable explanation was that my body wanted to talk to me. I assumed it said: “I don’t want you to suppress or shift the pain. I want to talk to you. Pain is my language.”

I decided to give it a try and listen. No more therapies. Instead, I observed my behavior against the background of my jaw pain for the next few weeks. I saw a connection! Each time I followed a certain behavioral pattern, the pain increased. By willfully stopping the performance of this pattern, the pain stopped.

A few weeks later, I had an accident on a hike. My right forefoot got stuck in the forest floor. I tripped and broke my big toe. I already had accepted that my body talks to me. If it talks through diseases, it probably also talks through injuries. What was the message of this injury?

My right forefoot had gotten stuck. Where was I stuck in life? The answer was obvious. I was stuck in my research. In 2011, I had started to explore the human box and how to get out of it. But I had not made any progress for months. And most of my findings were just theory. Why? Because I did not apply them to myself. I hadn’t changed much in my life and still followed most of the human box programs.

On 28 September 2014, I gathered all my courage and decided to leave the human box social life. In the next few months, I ended my professional activities and my relationship, said farewell to family and friends, gave away most of my belongings, and sold my apartment. I moved to a village near the Austrian mountains to live there with no social interaction and no media consumption. I had only the most essential contacts, such as for shopping and occasionally eating in restaurants. I fully concentrated on exploring the questions: What am I? What is the human box? How do I get free from my programs? The scientist in me also wanted to understand the mental mechanisms behind the human box.

This was the beginning of the most exciting time of my life.

I explore these questions ever since. I tirelessly dig through the countless layers of programs that control me in order to find and analyze, then learn to master them. The resulting mental transformation was and is accompanied by an amazing and powerful physical transformation.

One of my main insights is that every disease, every injury, and every pain is connected to a program or how we deal with life situations. Diseases, injuries, and pain are messages. They are an inner wisdom’s request to change something. This inner wisdom pushes us towards living who and what we truly are; it pushes us to learn to Know Ourselves!

The more a person moves away from its true nature, the “louder” the body speaks like this. If one disregards this voice for years, the result can be serious or chronic diseases, chronic pain, an accumulation of injuries, or adverse life situations. The closer one gets to one’s true nature, the healthier one is and the smoother and more fulfilling life is: Know Thyself, Heal Thyself!

With this said we need to consider the questions: What is health? What is a fulfilling life?

I felt healthy during my math career. But after years of deprogramming, I reached a level of health that is far better than what I considered health back then. (Being free of symptoms is something different than being healthy.) My “old” life around my career as a mathematician seemed fulfilled. But the more programs I got free from on this transformative journey, the closer I got to my true nature and the more fulfilling my life became. The fulfillment that I experience today is far greater than anything I experienced since I was a child.

I’ll elaborate on all this and many related issues in my next articles, for this is the beginning of a series of articles in which I will share some of my findings and experiences from years of exploring the human box and, thus, learning to Know — and Heal — Myself.
