How Keeping One Promise Transformed My Career Trajectory !
In 2009, the world was grappling with a recession, and the job market had dramatically contracted. As I prepared to graduate from college that same year, the timing could not be worse. Amidst widespread layoffs and hiring freezes, securing even a single job offer felt like an insurmountable challenge. Yet, against all odds, I found myself with not one, but two job offers. This experience underscored for me that while hard work and talent are crucial, a strong value system is equally important. I’d like to share a compelling story from my life that illustrates how adhering to a simple promise helped me get a second job which was almost like a miracle during the recession.
Graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati in itself was a very exciting milestone for me. Known as one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in India, IIT nurtures the ambition of making a significant impact in the real world. However, as my graduation approached in 2009, the excitement was dampened by the global market crash, casting a shadow over our job prospects. What should have been a time of celebration turned into a period of uncertainty, with many of us questioning if we would find employment at all.
Fortunately, the robust recruitment system at IIT began to show its strength. Despite the economic downturn, companies started to express their interest, adhering to a system where they’re ranked and slotted for interviews based on the compensation they offer, with the highest-paying ones getting priority. Normally, securing one job offer would allow a student to aim for another in a company of their dreams. However, given the recession’s impact, the college changed its policy, limiting students to just one job offer each. This decision was made to maximize the chances of employment for the entire graduating class, a testament to the solidarity and adaptability inherent within the IIT community during challenging times.
On the first day of recruitment, multiple companies were on campus, and I was fortunate enough to qualify for two opportunities. After acing the preliminary screening test, I was among the ten candidates shortlisted for an interview with one of the companies, which had plans to hire six from our group. During my interview, the conversation took a fascinating turn when I shared my work on developing an algorithm to isolate genes from DNA — segments vital for protein synthesis. My approach, combining mathematics and coding to tackle a biological challenge, piqued the interviewer’s interest, leading to an enthusiastic exchange. In the spur of the moment, I offered to compile my research on a CD (a common storage medium at the time) and send it to him, an offer he eagerly anticipated.
Reflecting on the day, I felt confident about my performance, save for one interview that could have been slightly better. However, when the results were announced, I found myself not among the chosen. The HR department explained that while they were impressed with my skills but the limited number of openings forced them to place additional candidates on a waiting list, with the possibility of reconsideration should they fail to secure hires from other campuses. This news was a blow, especially since the company, a prominent American financial technology firm known for its specialized work, was at the top of my list of desired employers. My disappointment was palpable, as joining their ranks had been a significant aspiration.
Despite the initial setback, I shifted my focus towards preparing for interviews with other companies. The next opportunity that came my way was with a business consultancy firm. Deep down, my passion lay in coding and the dynamic world of technology companies. However, given the grim state of the job market, options were limited. I found myself at a crossroads: to accept next available opportunity or to take a risk and wait for companies that matched my interests.
Faced with this reality, I contemplated the prospect of entering the consultancy sector. While consultancy offered a lucrative career path, it was a departure from the hands-on tech work that fueled my passion. Nonetheless, I rationalized that embarking on a career in a different field was preferable to facing unemployment. In India, a gap in one’s resume can lead to negative perceptions, making future job searches more challenging.
Determined to make the most of the opportunity, I proceeded with the interview and was successful. It appeared that fate had chosen a path for me in business consultancy rather than software engineering. Considering the circumstances, I felt fortunate; many of my peers were still searching for employment. This sense of gratitude helped me find contentment in my situation, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of my new career direction.
Reflecting on my experience a few days after the interview with the first company, I recalled the promise I had made to send a CD containing my DNA analysis research. Initially, I doubted the value of fulfilling this promise, suspecting that our paths might never intersect again, and the interviewer might not even remember the commitment. However, recognizing the importance of honoring my word, I decided to proceed. While uncertain if it would ever be reviewed, I felt compelled to complete this gesture.

This period of waiting provided me with an opportunity to delve into the world of consultancy — a path I hadn’t envisioned for myself. With curiosity, I began researching the challenges and opportunities within the consultancy field, dedicating my time to developing the necessary skills for success in this new and unexplored career trajectory. This proactive approach helped me transition my mindset and prepare for the next chapter of my professional life, despite the unexpected turn of events.
Out of the blue, a month later, an email arrived that nearly had me leaping out of my chair in surprise. It was from the first company, offering me a position I had long coveted but scarcely hoped to secure. This development was wholly unexpected, especially since I knew I was on a waiting list alongside other candidates. The joy I felt was immeasurable; amidst a time when many of my peers were still searching for their first job offer, I found myself with two.
In another turn of event, the business consultancy firm revised their offer. Because of the recession they reduced the compensation by 20% and pushed the start date by several months. In stark contrast, the offer from the first company was not only in a field I was deeply passionate about but also came with a compensation package nearly twice that of the consultancy role. The elation I felt was unparalleled, marking me as one of the rare few in my college to have secured two job offers under such challenging circumstances.
Reflecting on this turn of events, I often ponder whether sending the CD to the interviewer played a pivotal role in securing the offer. Although I never sought confirmation upon joining the company, I choose to believe in the positive impact of that action. It not only steered me towards a job that aligned with my passions but also set the foundation for tremendous personal and professional growth, eventually leading to my relocation from India to the USA.
Had I embarked on a career in business consultancy, I often wonder where I would be today. While it’s impossible to say for certain whether I’d be as fulfilled or successful, I find solace and satisfaction in the path I’ve taken. If given the chance to revisit any moment in my past, I would return to the instant I decided to honor my promise by sending that CD. It was a right decision, and for that, I would thank my past self — a simple act of following through on a commitment that shaped my future in ways I could never have imagined.
