How I’m Planning to Succeed at My 30-Day Writing Challenge

This time, it’ll work

It’s not the first time I’m pledging to engage in a 30-day challenge, but this time I will succeed. During my first few months as a writer on Medium, I tried very hard to write at least one story a day. This was already almost impossible to achieve, and I felt bad seeing prolific writers publishing up to 3 stories every single morning. I have a lot going on at the moment so aiming so high would be lying to myself — writing one post a day, though, is challenging but achievable.

Here’s why this time, it’ll work:

I’m prepared

I already listed all of my 30 blog posts and the publications I want to submit them to. Failing to prepare is what set me up for failure in the first place. Searching for a good story idea took away time and energy from writing. At the end of the day, I spent hours looking for something to write about and very little time writing about it.

Now, I have a list of content ready to be written. The only thing I have to do? Sit at my desk and write.

What you can do

Take out your notebook and brainstorm blog post ideas.

  1. Look at the publications you already wrote for, and consider new ones. What could be of interest to them?
  2. Think of your past work: what topics could you expand on? Can you try a different angle?
  3. Think of topics you like but are not necessarily in your area of expertise.
  4. Browse Twitter, Reddit, and other social media platforms for popular questions.
  5. Ask your audience what they want to read about.

I scheduled time to write

Deciding when you will sit quietly and write is critical to success, as it prevents you from procrastinating or letting other tasks distract you. However, you don’t necessarily need to set aside a 3-hour block.

How long does it usually take you to write a full-length article?

For example, it takes me about 1h30 if I’m 100% focused. So, every morning at 10 am, I challenge myself to write a long-form article in no more than an hour and a half, and then allocate 15 minutes to editing.

What you can do

  1. During the day, when are you the most alert? Consider writing at that time every day.
  2. Time yourself: how long does it take you to write a story when you’re fully concentrated?

My writing muscle is stronger than it was

If it takes me less than two hours to write a story now, it wasn’t always the case. Back when I started, the writing portion took me at least 3 hours while editing required another hour. By practicing every day, the process eventually became MUCH easier and faster than it was.

Flex your writing muscle, strengthen it. Write every day, even if it’s only a page in your journal. With time, it will become a lot easier to create good content.

What I’m hoping to get from this challenge

I have been less active on Medium these past few weeks, hence the engagement on my post and my earnings have both decreased. Undertaking this challenge will hopefully help me attain the following goals:

  • Become a better writer, polish my craft and my voice
  • Attract at least 50 new followers
  • Reach $100/month

How about you?
