Finding a sense of purpose!

I recently came across a book that changed my perception of a happy life. There is a common term “Ikigai” which is used amongst Japanese people. Most of them have found their ikigai. They have found happiness, satisfaction, and a more meaningful way of life.

Only staying active will make you want to live a hundred years.

Have you found your ikigai?

Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles have written a book, Ikigai The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life. In the book, they take us to the Japanese island of Okinawa, where ikigai was born. There are many centenarians living on this island, also known as Island of Immortals.

What is Ikigai?

Ikigai is the intersection of your passion, profession, mission, and vocation. According to Japanese, everyone has an ikigai. Some have found their ikigai, while others are looking for it.

Our ikigai is hidden deep within us. Finding it might require some time and patience. But, if someone has found it — it becomes their reason to get up in the morning.

Ikigai in Japanese is written as 生き甲斐, where 生き means life and 甲斐 means “to be worthwhile”. Further, 甲斐 can be broken into 甲 and 斐. 甲 means “armor”,” number one”, and “to be the first”. And, 斐 means “beautiful” and “elegant”.

The word is beautiful and the meaning itself gives a message of how one’s life should be. But, Okinawans believe ikigai gives a sense of purpose to each and every day of their lives.

And, the purpose is served each and every day by everyone — even a seventy-year-old man. In fact, there is no word in Japanese that means “retire” as in the sense of “leaving the workforce for” as in English. There is no concept of retirement in Japanese culture. It might sound strange but people have fallen in love with what they do, who they meet, and what they eat.

How Japanese live at their fullest?

After meeting Okinawans and spending time with them, the authors of the book decided to publish the life rules of the Japanese in a book. Therefore, Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles in their book, Ikigai The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life brought up ten life rules. These life rules can help the one who is seeking ikigai.

  • Stay active and don’t retire
  • Leave urgency behind and adopt a slower pace of life
  • Only eat until you are 80 percent full
  • Surround yourself with good friends
  • Get in shape through daily, gentle exercise
  • Smile and acknowledge people around you
  • Reconnect with nature
  • Give thanks to anything that brightens our day and makes us feel alive.
  • Live in the moment
  • Follow your ikigai

How to unlock your ikigai?

I have listed these life lessons or rules whatever you may say. And, that's it! You will find your ikigai. Is that it?

These are just the ways from which you can find your ikigai. If you find yours, a win-win for you. But, if you not, these can only give you a polished life. Will you be happy with it? I can’t say!

So, first of all- Ask Questions! Be Curious!

Our intuition and curiosity are very powerful internal compasses to help us connect with our ikigai.

Start today. Let’s create a single expression of our ikigai today. And, live to our fullest.

Peace!
