How I Went from Zero Experience as a Writer to Medium Partner in 9 Days
Believe it or not, you can too with these 5 easy steps.

The title sums up the point of this article but let’s get into it. I started writing on Medium on March 3rd and got accepted into the Medium Partner Program on March 12th. So we’re looking at 9 days from fresh account to over 100 followers, not too shabby. Let’s get into the meat and potatoes of this article, how can you replicate it? Well, believe it or not, It’s quite easy so lets dig in;
Find your niche
So you’ve made your account and are ready to start writing. What do you write about? How do you choose what is worth your time to write about? Well, there are a number of ways to breach this subject.
Write about things you have knowledge of or are passionate about
This is the route I took. I have knowledge of a lot of different entrepreneurial subjects and decided I wanted to inform and engage with other people who share this interest. While not a great writer myself, I thought that I could at least get some scribbles down that some people would find engaging.
Write about trendy or relevant topics
A good route if you’re looking to get a boost to your views or followers through relevant or trendy topics. Whether it’s pop culture, real world news, or music. Be warned if you choose this path and are not passionate about it, burnout is a real possibility.
Write to inform
So you’re a teacher. You can write tutorials or guides on particular subjects and get real engagement from people who want to learn. I myself love teaching and sharing my knowledge with other people so I combined my love for entrepreneurship and teaching into one.
While these are only a handful of ideas, do know that there are a ton of resources out there that will assist you in choosing what to write about. Do some research on Medium and see what people are wanting to read. Medium is categorized by tags so search popular tags in the niche you’re interested in and check out your ‘competition’.
Engagement
This more than likely played a big part in why I was able to reach that 100 follower mark so quickly. I found similar articles that I was writing and engaged with people who were commenting and applauding those articles.
I followed others who had applauded articles in my niche and left comments on their content. This is a pretty mainstay method with a lot of social media sites such as Instagram, YouTube, or even Facebook. Interact with people and they will interact back, usually.
Follow for follow is a pretty popular thing on this platform but I didn’t partake in it. I followed people I thought provided me with content I wanted to see and some of them followed me back. Applaud content you’re interested in and Medium will provide you with this type of content on your feed. This is a great way to see what’s out there and let’s you get a sense of what works and what doesn’t. Be warned, follow for follow can be considered spammy or unethical to a certain degree so tread lightly.
Put simply, find authors in your niche that you enjoy and then engage with their community. If they enjoy your content you may be surprised at how many people will stick around for the long haul.
Work on your titles
In a sea of content it’s hard to get yours to stand out from the crowd. I have experience with growing on other social media sites so I knew from the start that titles will be VERY important. Titles play a big role when it comes to getting people to click on your content. It’s the first impression most users will have of you and if you don’t do a good job pulling them in, it will be the last.
This will take some adjusting if you’re content isn’t seeing views. Try to pinpoint what works and what doesn’t. Browse other popular articles in your niche and borrow things that are working. Clickbait is most definitely used on this platform so try to incorporate it into your account. The thing with clickbait I want to emphasize is, don’t mislead. If your title is misleading it builds a foundation of mistrust with your potential followers. There is a fine line to walk so tread carefully.
Work on your graphics
While Medium does provide you a way to add graphics on your articles, I would suggest signing up for an account on FreePik. I can’t recommend them enough and I’ve used them a ton of commercial projects myself. Graphic design doesn’t have to be a thing you get heavily invested in but I would recommend at least learning the basics of Photoshop.
I usually download some images and then alter them myself to my liking. Make sure the images you use can be used commercially and experiment to see what works. I’m still fairly new here and am currently experimenting myself so time will tell if what I’m doing works but I have a good feeling.
Again, clickbait can be your friend here. Adjust your graphics to get people to click on your content, that’s the name of the game. A good title and graphic will get people interested enough to at least give you a shot.
Create quality content
The other things while necessary, wont play as an important of a role as creating quality, engaging content. Work on writing multiple articles a day, you don’t have to publish it all but the quantity of your work will make you a better writer (something I’ve found out recently) in the long run. Most importantly, try to provide an experience. You want people to share your writing with others and the quickest way to do that is to write something memorable. Something that they would want to share.
Though it does seem that Medium does appreciate the quantity over the quality, but try to find a nice middle ground. I’m aiming for an article a day and while challenging at times, it has gotten easier.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I’m still new here but these are the things that I focused on from the start. It seemed to work for me so maybe it’ll work for you as well. There is no 100% fool proof plan to growing on social media, it will be some trial and error but in the end you will come out as a better content creator.
