How I Use Trojan Horse SEO To Break Into Ultra-Competitive Niches
A little-known legal and ethical approach

I usually avoid competitive niches because they are so much harder to break into — especially for new bloggers.
Yet, two of the websites in my portfolio exist in the metaverse of large, competitive niches. I used a simple (but rarely talked about) strategy to break into these niches.
I call the method, Trojan Horse SEO.
Here is what you’ll read about in this article:

What Is Trojan Horse SEO?
Here’s a quick history lesson: a Trojan Horse is typically a metaphor for tricking your enemies into accepting you on their side.
According to Brittanica, the Greeks were battling the Trojans, so they stashed soldiers inside a big hollow wooden horse. The Trojans accept the gift, wheel it into the city gates, and… BAM! The Greeks rush out of the horse, attack, and take over the city (Troy).
An important note: Trojan Horse SEO is not about tricking Google (or anyone), but it is a strategic method of accessing a competitive niche. Trojan Horse SEO is 100% legal, ethical, and will not get you penalized by Google.
By the way, SEO stands for search engine optimization.
It’s about how to optimize your website and individual website articles to rank well in Google.
In Trojan Horse SEO, you enter a difficult but profitable niche (like Health and Fitness), by “hiding” inside of a smaller sub-niche.
Let’s break it down:
- The competitive niche is your city of Troy.
- The sub-niche you choose is your Trojan Horse
- You gain entrance through the “gift” of developing authority in the sub-niche
- You break free (rush out of the Trojan Horse) by transitioning into more competitive sub-niches within the larger competitive niche
Each one of these points requires a little detail. The rest of this article will be how I apply this strategy — with examples.
Build Your Trojan Horse
The first step in Trojan Horse SEO is to choose your Troy. Select the ultra-competitive niche you want to enter.
Two niches always come to my mind:
- Health and Fitness
- Finance
You don’t need to choose from these two, but they will serve as examples in explaining the strategy.
I suggest that you choose your competitive niche based on your interest, expertise, and profitability. The more you know about a topic, the easier it will be to employ Trojan Horse SEO.
It’s not absolutely necessary, but it does help.
Once you choose your competitive niche, it’s time to niche down to a less competitive sub-niche. This is your Trojan Horse. There are almost unlimited sub-niches for any niche.
Again, select your sub-niche by passion, knowledge, profitability, and level of competition.
Ideally, you will find a sub-niche with low competition, high search volume, and high-income potential. To find your sub-niche, use all the tools in your toolbox. That’s what I do.
You can find a good sub-niche by:
- Choosing a very boring sub-niche (boring niches bring riches)
- Searching through Amazon products
- Reading niche-related forums
- Seeing how many low-competition keywords/topics you can find in the sub-niche (using The Google Autocomplete or Alphabet Soup method
- Using free tools like Google Trends, Google Keyword Planner, MozBar, SearchResponse.io, AnswerthePublic, AnswerSocrates, and more
- Scrolling through website repositories such as Flippa, Empire Flippers, and many others
In my experience, you want to find a sub-niche where you can easily find 20–30 (or more) low-competition keywords very quickly. It will probably take you some time to find the right sub-niche, so don’t rush this part.
After all, this is the most important step in Trojan Horse SEO.
Ride Your Trojan Horse
The second big step is to build authority in the sub-niche. This is where you build trust to convince “Troy” (the big bad competitive niche) to let you inside the city.
You build trust and authority by creating accurate and valuable content.
Here is what I do:
- Write 10–20 articles based on low-competition questions and topics in the sub-niche.
- Most of my articles range between 1,000 and 2,000 words per article.
- I keep adding more content each month while the old content ages and ranks in Google.
The timeframe for ranking varies widely. It depends on the topics you choose, the competition for those topics, how well you write the articles, and other factors. I wouldn’t freak out until you’ve given all of your articles 12 months to rank (that’s 12 months from the time you hit “publish” on each individual article).
Therefore, if you write 30 articles on low-competition topics, you should see some rankings and traffic in 12 months (or less).
Ride your Trojan Horse sub-niche until you build trust and authority.
You know you’ve built authority when many of your articles rank high in Google search and when you get thousands of monthly page views. The more, the better. You can also use free and paid tools (MozBar and Ahrefs) to track the authority of your site.
Some bloggers proactively build backlinks to boost the authority of their sites.
Personally, I don’t do much backlinking at all. I tend to let backlinks build organically as other bloggers find my high-ranking articles and link to them. Occasionally, I will use HARO (Help a Reporter Out).
It’s up to you.
Escape Your Trojan Horse
The final step in Trojan Horse SEO is to keep “stepladdering” up to more and more competitive sub-niches within the greater niche.
Let’s say that you chose the Health and Fitness niche as your “Troy.” You then spent time researching and nailing down your sub-niche. Maybe you went with “Running for Paraplegics” or “Yoga traveling” or something else very micro-niche.
After a year or two (or more) of building authority in your sub-niche, you scale up to “Running for People with Disabilities.”
Over time, you niche up to more and more competitive sub-niches.
That’s how you “escape” your Trojan Horse and break into ultra-competitive niches. I’ve repeated this process with a few of my websites, so it’s a validated method in my personal experience.
