How I Stay Productive 99% of Every Day
Productivity in your own life
Productivity is the key to success, and in this article, I will talk about how you can become productive, but first, let me introduce myself. My name is Bright. I am a digital marketer and also a writer.
I love watching football, and I also go to church, read the Bible, and hang out with friends and family. I give plenty of attention to my wife and kids. As you can imagine, my life is pretty busy, and if I didn’t have a very effective way to keep everything organized and moving, it would be a completely chaotic mess.
Because I’ve arrived at this position, I’ve developed a perfect strategy for being productive. In this article, I’m going to share that strategy with you guys. This article will also help if you struggle with procrastination or motivation in general. Let’s just get right into it. Here are some of my absolute best tips to stay extremely productive, and we will break them down one by one.
We have the pillars of physical health. We have purpose and drive. We have taming your dopamine levels. We have the essential morning routine, the power of your environment, and then finally, software and technologies to use. If you apply some of these lifestyle habits, I guarantee you that you are going to see some increase in productivity in your own life. Now, to be clear, I’m not one of those people who has every single part of their day completely dialed in from 9:45 AM to 10:30 or anything like that. I have to go to bed by 11:30 PM. I’m not like that at all. Every single day for me is different, but the general foundation of every day is pretty much the same. Let’s break down the pillars of health. This is broken down into three subcategories.
You have sleep
Which is the most important?
You have food and a diet
which is the second most important.
Then you have the third, which is exercising and avoiding substances that slow you down.
Let’s talk about sleep
Sleep is a fundamental building block to your health. If you do not get enough sleep and you’re doing everything else right, eventually, you’re going to crash and burn. You need to figure out exactly how much sleep you need. I think most humans need between six and eight hours. Effectively, you need to sleep that much every single night. But more importantly, you need to sleep in a proper environment.
Going to bed at relatively the same time, give or take a couple of hours, is really important. Some time ago, I was really working myself too much. I almost broke down, and when I went to the hospital for a checkup, I found out I was having high blood pressure. I had to retrace my step by slowing down my daily activities, and I started paying attention to my health. I started getting more sleep, and my blood pressure became normal. Sleeping in a very dark room is very important. A room that is around 70 degrees temperature is preferable.
Also, you want to stay away from food and water right before you go to bed. Then on top of that, you want to stay away from any artificial light the closer you get to bed. As it gets later in the night, I actually light candles in my room, and I try to keep as many lights off as possible because candlelight doesn’t keep you up the same way that artificial light does. That helps me just fall asleep more naturally and get a better night’s sleep so that I wake up the next day feeling rested.
Okay, next is the quality of food, and this one is pretty simple. You want to just eat whole foods.
So, foods that are not processed, foods that have one ingredient like eggs, meats, potatoes, corn, vegetables, chicken, beef, all of that stuff. For me personally, it’s between 90–95 % of my entire diet is foods that are just single ingredient food. Now, I’ve noticed that after I get used to this, I actually feel much, much better. My energy is more consistent throughout the entire day. I’m able to be much more productive and make way more decisions before I get burnt out every single day. I’m able to sleep better. I’m able to exercise better. I’m stronger. I think faster. I remember better. It really does help a lot. If I travel, for example, I start eating processed foods for a couple of weeks, I notice how sluggish I am and how flogging my brain is, and I immediately notice the effects. It really is that drastic.
After you get that down, if you smoke or drink a lot or do like to smoke nicotine a lot, I would recommend just trying to get rid of all of those as well. Weed, is not going to make you more productive, no matter what you say. Alcohol is terrible for you.
It’s bad for your brain. It damages your brain, it damages your organs, and it slows you down. It’s poison. You’d probably want to get rid of that if you’re trying to be as productive as possible. Those are the pillars of physical health, and there’s much more that goes into it, but I think those three alone have like 80-maybe 85% of the overall weight and health. If you can get those three things down, you’re in a really solid spot.
Next, we have purpose and drive.
Arguably, this is probably one of the most important things when it comes to productivity and motivation. The reason is because if you want to be productive, you need to have a clear goal in mind. You need to answer the question, Why am I trying to be productive?
If you’re being so hard on yourself and you’re like, Why can’t I work? Why can’t I be productive? Why can’t I start a Shopify store? Do whatever the case is. If you ask yourself why you can’t do it, you need to ask yourself, Why are you trying to do it anyway?
You need to identify a purpose or a goal that you’re going for. In my opinion, the goal needs to be something a little bit more than just like, I want to buy a Lamborghini. It needs to mean something to you. The more that it means to you, the more drive and the more motivation you’re going to have, and the more willing you are going to be to want to work. Believe it or not, a lot of people actually DM me and ask me, How do I get motivation?
How do you stay motivated?
I have no motivation and I’m like, Okay, well, what’s your purpose? What’s your goal? Well, I want to be wealthy. Okay, everyone wants to be wealthy, but you need to have a clear idea of where you are going. If you don’t know where you’re going and you don’t know where you’re at, how can you possibly expect to get to that goal?
Do you expect it to just happen randomly? You just like, I’m going to just walk around this forest and I’m randomly going to find the oasis. No, you need to know exactly where you’re going if you want to get there before you die. That’s the point. For me, it’s about my family. I’m getting older now and I have only two kids, I want to reform the education system. These things are going to cost a lot of money because I want to have more kids. I want to have a few houses. I want to be able to go from house to house as I please. I know that I have big goals. I know where I want to go. I know exactly what my life should look like in the next 10 years and what I want to do. It requires me to have a lot of money, so, that’s why I’m working so hard now. But the point of all that is that I know what I want.
I’m going to give you guys a tour through my Notion so you can see how I break down and how I manage all the things that I manage.
Next up, we have to tame your dopamine
This is something that’s also very, very important, so please pay attention and maybe take some notes. In the world we live in today, or at least in Western society, a lot of people are very addicted to dopamine, and we get so much of it, way more than we have ever gotten before. Our tolerance to it is much higher. We’re used to it, and so if we do not get it, we seek it out much faster and in much greater amounts.
Therefore, when we do boring things that don’t offer us as much dopamine, such as reading a book, cleaning, making your bed, doing laundry, or working on a business, it’s very, very hard because it doesn’t offer the same amount of dopamine as sitting down and going through TikTok, which offers a load of dopamine and is very easy to do.
You have both of these combined. It’s very easy to just fall into that trap. We’re playing video games. It’s very easy to play video games and you get way more dopamine. Your brain is like, Hey, do this. Don’t do that. My point is it gets very boring to do the mundane things. Okay, Bright, what do you do? You need to identify the areas of your life where you’re getting unhealthy dopamine. So very good examples are video games, will be eating a lot of sugary foods and drinks like soda and sugary stuff all the time.
Pornography is terrible, and social media, of course. Social media is one of the worst ones that is out there. And this depends on a case by case, but if you can identify something in your own life that’s unique, then write it down. So now that you have all those identified, you want to slowly turn down the dial on how much you consume of these things. Most of you guys probably have heard of the dopamine detox, which is where you pick three days and just remove all of it all at once for three days. But my preference would be to just turn it down and get used to it and build a habit of living life with these dials turned down lower and lower and lower. I think if you do it this way, you have more control over it, and it will be much easier over time.
This leads perfectly to the next one, which is the essential routine. There are a million different morning routines out there that you guys have all seen, and people say you need to take cold showers or meditate or read every morning to become a millionaire. None of that’s true. But it is true that having a routine greatly increases your productivity and your workflow because you can’t just be doing random things every single day and expect to move and make a lot of decisions and progress a lot every single day. For the most part, I think that it’s best to just have a block-by-block schedule. For example, I don’t like to work as soon as I wake up, so I take 30 to 60 minutes to just sit in bed or just go outside or read a little bit and just not really use my brain and just let myself wake up. That’s my preference.
Then after that, once I’m alert and turned on, I can work for about 2–3 hours. Then I work for 2–3 hours, and then I get hungry. I have my first meal of the day. That’s how it works. My brain gets used to it and it becomes easy to work and go to the gym and stuff because I get so excited about having food after. It works out pretty well.
One last thing I want to mention about having a routine and why it’s important is that eventually if you do these things long enough, they become a habit. If you work for a couple of hours every day in the morning and then have your breakfast for 30 days in a row, you make it a habit and that’s how you have to do this.
You can’t rely on motivation. Motivation will eventually run out, but you have to rely on habits and discipline. Now, the next thing I have is the power of the environment. Now, this one is significantly less important than all of the other ones, but if you’re doing everything else right, then this could be something to help boost you as well. I found that I’m a lot more productive in an environment in which I’m inspired. For example, when I went to Seattle this one time, I went and stayed at this massive hotel, and it just had this great grand dome-type thing, a huge Christmas tree, and a restaurant. It was late at night, and there were just a few people there, and there were multiple stories and stuff.
I remember how grand it was. There were just chairs and tables in the center. I would just get on my computer there and I was just able to be so productive because I was just so inspired by the environment. I think if you could switch up your environment, that’s good. A second side to this coin is you don’t want to be around negative people. You don’t want to be around noise. For example, when I lived with my mom, she had a lot of people in the house and they were always talking and they’re always asking me to do stuff and I wasn’t able to get in the zone, which I think is important because if you get focused, you don’t want to be distracted. Say you live with your parents and you’re not able to move out and have a cool inspiration or travel or whatever, maybe just go to a free place.
A library is a great place I used to work at. Hotel lobbies are really, really good. Coffee shops are obviously free to go to, and you can go to those. But just any spot, like Be Creative, you can go to restaurants. You can go to a bunch of different spots. I find it really helpful. Now, I’m going to talk about software and technology. Now, the first thing I want to mention is your phone. It would be best to keep your phone in a separate room if you’re trying to get 2–3 hours of work. I think the best way to do it is to be like, Okay, I’m going to work for an hour or 90 minutes.
