How to Stay Happy When the News is so Hateful

Tips for being happy in a crazy world

Photo by Jhefferson Santos from Pexels

Dave, my husband, works for the federal government in a litigation management role. His day starts by reading the news. And although he doesn’t need to read about politics and events outside of our country, being informed is part of his nature. Sharing what he reads with me used to be part of his morning routine, too.

But as much as I love having a spouse who’s well-read and cares about what’s going on in the world, his media diet was killing my spirit and joie-de-vivre. It was Trump’s election that forced me to impose a media ban on what Dave is allowed to share with me.

Given how many people suffer from the overwhelm of consuming a daily diet based on upsetting news, I thought my media diet menu might be helpful to others who are trying to feel a little happier in this crazy-ass world.

What news is okay to share?

On the surface, it’s pretty easy to figure this out: stop consuming news that upsets you.

But this is a blunt tool since avoiding all the news that’s upsetting means also missing the news that you actually have some power to influence—if only a tiny bit—like the one or two or ten starfish on a beach you can throw back and save.

News that delights me. I can contribute.

These are stories like Adidas making a running shoe that can be 100% recycled into new shoes with no waste. This information might very well influence how I make my next sneaker purchase so it’s valuable since it’s uplifting and actionable.

Share value: 1/4 — share as many stories as you want

News that upsets me. But I can do something.

These are stories like the horrific news two weeks ago out of Alabama about the new law that makes all abortions illegal. As distressing as this news is it ranks as shareable since I do have the power to take action. I can write about my experience to put a face on the impact this law will have on real people. And, I can donate money to the ACLU and Planned Parenthood’s lawsuit.

Share value 2/4 — share judiciously

News that delights me. No action needed.

These are news stories like the fact that Sesame Street recently introduced a new character who lives in a foster home. It makes me happy to know that the experience of so many children is being normalized. But since I don’t have school-aged children, the information is not something I’ll actively do anything with.

Share value: 3/4—share just a couple a week since these can become time distractions from actionable stories

News that upsets me. I have no power.

This is virtually anything that US President Trump says or does. These are stories about out-of-control wildfires destroying communities. Stories about mass shootings and plane crashes and tourists dying on local hiking trails.

Share value: 0/4. Never forward these, ever. Some will seep into my own media feed and that will be more than enough.

I hope this is a story that delights you because you can contribute to it by sharing your strategies for coping with the overwhelm of bad news. I hope you will!
